CAPlease do not give your phone number at any restaurant or store that you shop at...
You’d often see them asking for your phone number when you buy groceries or clothes or make bookings for restaurants...
The excuse is to tie you into loyalty programs, discounts, and customized offerings or communicate with you regarding a sale...
But often this data gets sold to others and ends up in marketing databases which exploit it to serve you ads.
Now, a Digital Personal Data Protection Act was passed in 2023... and for implementation, the DPDP Rules 2025 have been released...
These rules now state that any store cannot refuse to sell you something if you don’t give your number... and it cannot be a mandatory requirement for sale.
But in case the number is necessary to complete a service... it can only be kept for the duration to meet the stated purpose - for example, if you’ve made a reservation and they need to call you to confirm...
Or for logistics, if you need to provide it for easier delivery coordination.
But once this purpose is served, they must delete your contact details... (cannot go beyond 3 years from last interaction with the customer)
Or to be deleted immediately if the consent is withdrawn by the customer.
Which means one of the biggest disruptions that is required in the market is now on loyalty programs...
And if you run a business with customer numbers, you will have to delete all numbers where the customer has not bought from you in 3 years, and that’s a cleanup businesses need to be ready for.
Two things... once these rules are passed this year... there will be constraints on whether people can note your number in visitor books at entrance to stores and malls... and the duration considered necessary for security.
Second, I would recommend everyone create an email ID just for all the registrations you may have to do for offering your contact details wherever necessary.

1. �PPF account for minor: In the case of PPF accounts opened under the name of a minor, the interest rate applicable to Post Office Savings Account (POSA) will be paid for such irregular accounts until the minor reaches the age of 18, at which point they become eligible to open their own account.
