This small town in Ladakh doesn’t experience winter, it survives it. Temperatures here regularly drop to -30°C, water freezes within seconds, roads disappear under thick snow, and in 1995, Drass recorded an extreme of -60°C, making it one of the coldest places humans live in.
But Drass is not just known for its extreme cold weather.
Located dangerously close to the Line of Control (LoC), Drass has always been strategically important and remains one of the most sensitive border regions in the world. This region is also one of the highest battlegrounds on Earth, where soldiers don’t just fight wars, they fight altitude, isolation, and brutal Himalayan winters.
During the Kargil War, Drass and its surrounding mountains became active battle zones. What looks calm and untouched today once echoed with gunfire, courage, and sacrifice. Every mountain here carries a story of resilience and bravery.
