LAToday we said farewell to Retired Homicide Sergeant Tommy Harris. Tommy spent 45 years in law enforcement. He started at Lynwood PD in 1973, when the Sheriff’s department assumed law enforcement duties from the city, Tommy transferred to patrol at Lakewood. He was proud to be one of the first detectives in the OSS unit, a member of mounted patrol, and a Drill Instructor at the academy where he promoted to sergeant. He then returned to OSS as a team lead before transferring to Homicide where he spent the remainder of his career. He retired in 2004 at age 60 when he reached mandatory retirement age. As soon as the age policy was lifted, he returned to work in the cold case unit where he remained until retirement finally stuck in 2018. Tommy was a competitive power lifter and body builder. He was inducted into the California Power Lifter Hall of Fame, earned dozens of medals in the Police and Fire games, and mentored others on their fitness journey. When he retired from competing, he transitioned to judging the powerlifting competitions. He took up golf and even managed to score the elusive hole in-one twice. Beyond all of these achievements, Tommy was generous and the life of the party. He is survived by his four children, ten grandchildren, and his sister. We send our condolences to the Harris family. Thank you for allowing us to honor Tommy as his legacy of service to his country, community, family, and friends will forever be remembered.
