CHJust when you thought the flock couldn’t get anymore dramatic I gotta add a few more to the mix🤣 also shout out to @dunkin.ducks with that little water bowl hack it seriously is awesome because finding a waterer that the ducklings can submerge their bills and eyes in but not get fully in is so hard! This works like a charm 👌

Adding ducks to our backyard homestead ✨
It is a common misconception that you need to have a large pond in your yard if you want to keep ducks. Lucky for us backyard homesteaders, that is not entirely true! Backyard ducks will be happy with a small pool deep enough to paddle and submerge their whole head. They need to keep their mucous membranes moist so having the pool of water clean and available at all times is really important.
Since space is a limiting factor for us, our ducks will live side by side with our chickens, free-ranging in the backyard with access to a small pond that is in the process of coming together!
I am so excited about these babies!! Any name ideas for this trio?

DU#ad It's duckling season! The top 3-5 things you must know when raising baby ducks for the 1st time! 🐥🐥🐥
1. Housing that they can grow into 🏠
They literally grow overnight, so BE PREPARED! Make sure to evolve their housing as they grow.
2. Water practices & hacks to keep their space dry
Using DIY methods like water jugs to help contain a dryer space, but also allows them to get all the water they need is 🔑! You will be happier when their house is dry😉 also, pro tip- they need the water dish to at least be deep enough to clear their nostrils in 👃💦
3. Heat/lamp practices 🌞
They need a lamp to help keep them warm, especially without a mama duck. Be sure to have it at a proper height so it isn't too close and enough space for them to get away from it if they need too.
4. Nutrition (all about Purina® feed and also water additives like probiotic & electrolyte). 🍽
My favorite thing about the Purina® feed is that it can be fed to ducks as their sole diet from the moment they hatch through their entire life. Also, a great bonus are the little packets you add to their water. They help with hydration, essential nutrients, and supports their digestive health and appetite.
5. Love, care, and socializing 💘 🤗
Cuddles are important. Everyone always asks how my ducks are so social... the answer is lots and lots of TLC. I spent tons of time with them. I also always had them socialize with visitors any time someone came by.

TAA lot of you have asked about my duckling brooder. Super easy here it is!
My container is lined with puppy pads and a layer of pine shavings. And of course I have a brooder plate for warmth.
Ducks are a lot messier with water than chicks, so the best way I've found to keep it dryer and cleaner is by using a cooling rack on top of a pan. That way you catch the water in the pan instead of on the bedding material. I put pine pellets in the pan to be absorbent and help with smell.
You still need to clean a duck brooder daily and make sure to keep the water and feed full but the joy you get from these sweet babies is endless and sooo worth it ❤️❤️❤️

LAIf you think raising ducklings is the same thing as raising chicks, think again! Here are some things I’ve learned so far! 🦆
Like chicks, ducklings need a brooder (a box, crate, bin, etc.) with a heat source to stay warm. They’re unable to regulate their temperature very well until their feathers come in so they need to be kept at a pretty consistent temperature during those first few weeks (32°C for the first 3 days and then decreasing gradually until they’re fully feathered). Plan to have a heat source (heat plates are safest), a water source (we use a Tupperware dish they can splash in!), a feeder and bedding (pine shavings, straw, etc.).
🌱Some other things to note: 🌸
Your ducklings poop constantly so plan to clean and refresh the brooder daily. It gets GROSS. Make sure you have good ventilation too. 🤢
Ducklings (and ducks) need more Niacin than chicks/chickens do so they have different feed. If you can only find chick starter feed (until you find duck starter feed… but hey fed is best) mix 1/2tsp of brewer’s yeast in 1C unmedicated chick starter. If their poop is bubbly/yeast smelling, you’re giving too much brewer’s yeast.
DUCKS LOVE WATER (Surprise!): Make sure they always have water to play in, drink and bathe. This makes keeping the brooder dry a pain, but… they’re ducks. Ducks need to be able to get their eyes wet, so make sure your waterer is deep enough for them to dunk their face.
Ducklings love to swim, but their feathers aren’t waterproof yet and they’re still on level 1 of swim lessons. Make sure to supervise and dry them off after.
They grow FAST. Make sure your brooder is big enough to accommodate them for at least the first 6-8 weeks temperature depending.
At 8 weeks old, switch from starter feed to grower feed. It has lower protein but more carbs to support their growth.
