Most people know this melody without knowing where it comes from. Grieg wrote it in 1875 for a scene that is anything but contemplative: Peer Gynt is in Morocco, lost, waking up under a tree surrounded by monkeys. The piece most associated with Nordic serenity is, at its origin, the sonic portrait of a man completely out of place. Grieg didn't ignore the absurdity. He understood that the dawn doesn't change because of who's watching it.

The orchestral construction replicates the real mechanics of light. The flute enters alone because the first glimmer is a point, not an explosion.
