SAFor a long time, I thought something was wrong with me.
I did everything “right.”
Chose the safe degree.
Survived the semesters.
Handled the pressure, the deadlines, the comparison.
But deep down, I felt disconnected.
Not lazy. Not incapable.
Just… misaligned.
The scariest part wasn’t admitting I didn’t want to be an engineer.
It was the guilt that followed.
The thought that I’d wasted years.
The fear that pivoting meant failing.
The pressure of expectations, family, society, my own younger self.
Everyone around me seemed to be moving forward, while I felt stuck in a degree that trained my brain but drained my energy.
Here’s what I’ve learned from where I stand now:
Engineering didn’t trap me.
It trained me.
It taught me how to think logically, break problems down, handle pressure, learn fast, and adapt.
What it didn’t teach me was that I’m allowed to choose differently.
The real problem wasn’t engineering.
It was believing that one decision at 18 had to define my entire life.
Today, I’m in a very different place, mentally and professionally.
And the biggest shift wasn’t changing paths.
It was changing how I looked at my degree.
What actually helped me move forward:
– I stopped tying my self-worth to a job title
– I accepted that skills are more powerful than labels
– I explored roles instead of rejecting myself prematurely
– I built clarity outside the syllabus
– I realised pivoting isn’t failure, it’s awareness
If you’re an engineering student who feels stuck, confused, or secretly unhappy, you’re not broken.
You’re just at the point where growth begins.
You didn’t mess up your life.
You’re just waking up to the fact that you have more options than you were ever told.

About this page, The Potential Dropout:
Day in the life of an engineering student was originally started by The Potential Dropout (me) on TikTok as a vlog series in December of 2021, in my first semester of university as a mechanical engineering student. I was failing my Calculus class at that point. Little did I know the video resonated with so many overnight, making the series a viral one on the Internet. Ever since then, hundreds of episodes came out, and the series documented my evolution as a person and a student through this challenging, yet eventful academic journey that taught me priceless lessons and shaped me into who I am today. Despite my ironic name, the series’ main purpose is to help other struggling students cope and navigate through their journey and encourage them to become a better version of themselves. The main message is to not give up, no matter the setbacks.
I’ve been documenting everything, from all-nighters and moments of failure to lessons, growth, and personal wins. Today, that journey has resonated with an audience of over 300,000 loyal followers around the world. My content has reached hundreds of millions of views.
Since then, we’ve expanded to

- YouTube (longer-form videos where I teach you courses and tips and tricks and offer mental health advice),
