Transcript: Hi all so you may remember a while ago we were offered a free trial of Reading.com which is an app to teach young kids reading skills. So my CODA and I tested it, he's 5. And here's our update!
The big positive is that he really enjoyed it. He's asked to play it multiple times. He calls it "the reading game." I noticed he actually enjoys the lessons even more than the game area of the app, which is cool because he's legit practicing reading short books, and practicing phonics. The other thing built into the app are these little sliders (him practicing S sounds) so What happens is , you move your hand slowly to sound out each sound, and then you move it fast (image of him sounding out and then blending the word "ram"). And I think that really helps remind the body how to connect the sounds, which is something he can struggle with. He knows each letter sound but the blending is hard. So this tactile part helps with the mind body connection, especially for a signer.
The big drawback here is that the app isn't accessible for me. There are parent training parts, and parts where the computer is talking directly to my kid, and I can see that sound is happening because there's a little icon that moves, but no captions.
So, overall experience was good because he liked it. Definitely worth a try for hearing families and hearing kids. But I hope in the future the creators will think about ways to make this more open and accessible to all families, too.
