Here’s a sneak peak into our short & sweet first grade grammar routine! This sentence labeling activity takes about 3-5minutes and it is a great review of previously taught skills. It is not a replacement for explicit instruction, just a quick way to review! We essentially play I Spy but with parts of speech! I pull our mentor sentences from our read alouds, make them up, or co-create them my students! This is just a short snippet of the routine! We label every word in the sentence and don’t worry- the kids were quick to let me know that I forgot to label “friends” as a noun 😂 The parts of speech labels are from @teachingahurd_ on tpt!

Here is a helpful way for kids to remember how to write the letter “a!” Kids have all sorts of funky ways to write this letter. Many kids make a full circle and add a line…often leaving the two parts unconnected. Others go around in a circle multiple times before adding the line. Stories like this stick with them and eventually they are writing the letter “a” without picking up their pencil! ✏️ Bin and multi-sensory sand linked in comments! #stjohnsreadingroom #thescienceofreading #sjrr #stjohnsmoms #readinghelpforkids #structuredliteracy #explicitinstruction

Explicit teaching works. Period. It’s clear. It’s direct. It builds skills fast. And guess what? If a wealthy student can’t read, they’ll get tutoring. What kind of tutoring? It will be based on explicit instruction. Structured. High-dose. Proven to work (see IDA). Because when it matters, no one plays guessing games. So why are teachers being marked down on evaluations for doing the very thing that works? The same thing families pay $100–$200 an hour for? Why are we denying explicit instruction in Tier 1? Why are we waiting until kids fall terribly behind—and usually provided an IEP—to give them what could have experienced in Tier 1? All kids deserve what works. Not just the ones who can afford it. Let’s stop gatekeeping effective instruction. Join the movement. Comment “newsletter” to get connected to our free educator community.

Students retain, master, and SPELL these words more successfully when we explicitly teach them the expected and unexpected spellings of the sounds we hear in words. I love that she asked why we spell the word want with an “a” instead of an “o” so I looked up the etymology of the word and we discovered that the word want relates back to the Old Norse word vant. #orthographicmapping #ortongillingham #reading #logicofenglish

Vocab routine 🌟 This is a snippet of what our vocab routine looks like when introducing Tier 2 vocab as part of our reading unit. Some parts were cut to make the video fit within the 3 minute limit but the whole clip was under 5mins. Routine: 💡Explicitly teach the new word, its meaning and part of speech 💡Introduce a visual representation of the word 💡Unpack how the word is used in the text (partly shown) 💡Unpack the word’s morphology and students were tasked with building related words on their whiteboards for 1min (not shown eg. Caution, cautionary etc) 💡Unpack the word’s etymology (not shown) 💡Students were tasked with brainstorming synonyms and antonyms for 1min on their whiteboards. When coming up with synonyms, it’s important to ensure that students understand their synonym needs to enable the sentence to maintain its meaning.

Printing with appropriate letter formation and spacing is hard work! Many kids struggle to make their printing look legible. Not only do kids have to remember WHAT letter makes that sound, they also have to remember WHAT it looks like and HOW it’s formed. This takes a lot of mental work. This is why we want to explicitly teach kids how to form and space their letters accurately. Once proper letter formation becomes automatic students have a lot more cognitive space to focus on spelling and writing, rather than spending all of their brain power remembering HOW to form these letters. Research shows that explicit printing AND handwriting practice are essential. #letterformation #printingpractice #scienceofreading #scienceofreadinginstruction #dyslexia #dyslexiaawareness #dysgraphia #literacymatters #structuredliteracy

HERITAGE PRINCIPALS VISIT // This week, Heritage College Lake Macquarie had the privilege of welcoming principals from Heritage Colleges across Australia. Our guests toured the school and visited our Primary classrooms, where students proudly showcased their learning through Explicit Instruction. Explicit Instruction (EI) is a structured and supportive teaching approach that breaks learning down into clear, manageable steps. It ensures every child understands what they are learning, why it matters, and how to succeed. It was a joy to see our students confidently demonstrate their skills to such an encouraging audience!

3 key elements of explicit instruction👇🏼 ✨ Clear Learning Objectives ✨ Begin every lesson by explicitly stating what students will learn. Use simple, direct language and check for understanding before moving on. I like to use “We Are Learning To” (WALT), “What I’m Looking For” (WILF) & “This Is Because” (TIB) in my classroom. I’ve seen other teachers using “Learning Intention” (LI) & “Success Criteria” (SC). ✨ Modeling & Guided Practice ✨ Demonstrate concepts to your students step-by-step (this is called the “I do” phase). Guide students through practice with scaffolding (this is called the “We do” phase). Then allow them to practice independently (this is called the “You do” phase). ✨ Checks for Understanding ✨ Continuously assess understanding through questioning (ie: picking a non-volunteer), choral response, whiteboards, or quick formative assessments to ensure all students are keeping up and ready to move on or if content needs to be retaught. #edi #explicitinstruction #explicitdirectinstruction #primaryteacher #beginningteacher #teachingresources #teachersfollowteachers #teachinghacks #teacherhacks #learningintentions

Stop the scroll for ANOTHER explicit vocabulary routine in action! So many of you asked me to model a sample vocabulary lesson after seeing my anchor chart! I posted Part 1️⃣ with “concentrating”, and part 2️⃣ with “inventors”. Today, we’re tackling part 3️⃣ with “creativity”. When planning an instructional read-aloud, I recommend pre-teaching 3-5 Tier 2 vocabulary words before reading. Why before? Because we’re priming students’ brains to recognize, process, and retain the words before they even hear them in context! When introducing a new word, some things you can consider are: ⚪️ Pronunciation ⚪️ Syllables & morphemes (hello, word nerds! 🧐) ⚪️ Etymology (if relevant!) ⚪️ Student-friendly definition ⚪️ Examples & nonexamples ⚪️ Related words ⚪️ Synonyms & antonyms ⚪️ Gestures ⚪️ Maybe even images or symbols that can bring the word to life! Vocabulary learning should be interactive, engaging, and meaningful—we want students to experience words, not just memorize them! Remember, this is just ONE way it can go! 💬Let me know what you think or what questions you may have! #vocabulary #vocabularyinstruction #vocabularylesson #explicitinstruction #structuredliteracy #bringingwordstolife #literacycoach #literacycoaching #tier2words #morphology #anchorcharts #jabaritries #gaiacornwall #instructionalreadaloud
