Traditional gemstone cuts use triangles to scatter light. In the trade, it’s called brilliance. A standard round diamond uses 57 or 58 triangular and kite shaped facets to refract light into a bunch of sparkles. The Opposed Bar Cut (or Pixel Cut) is the exact opposite of that. It’s a kind of step-cut: Instead of scattering light, it organises it. By cutting long, parallel rectangular trenches on the pavilion (bottom) and intersecting them at exactly 90 degrees with trenches on the crown (top), the lapidary creates an optical illusion. The light gets trapped in a grid. As you tilt the stone, the intersections of those bars flash on and off. Before 1919, diamonds were weird. Cutters worked by hand, optimising for the stone’s look in candlelight, rather than electric lighting, following the natural, chaotic shape of the rough crystal. They created “Old Mine” and “Old European” cuts: stones with chunky facets, off-centre culets, and deep, warm glows. They’re a pain in the ass to set, but at least every single one was unique. Then, an engineer named Marcel Tolkowsky published a mathematical thesis on how to maximise light return. He created the Round Brilliant. It was an absolute triumph of physics. But it turned diamond cutting from an art form into an assembly line. The industry realised that if every diamond was cut to the exact same mathematical proportions, they could be mass-produced, easily graded on a chart, and sold universally. The personality was engineered out of the stone in favour of pure, standardised brightness. When you choose a Kite, a Shield, or an antique cut today, you are rejecting the assembly line. You are bringing the personality back.

The tip of this tool holds an industrial diamond, and it’s the culet of the diamond that’s impacting the metal. Instead of cutting, it displaces the silver, forming tiny faceted impressions, almost like microscopic prisms. Those facets catch and reflect light in different directions, which is what gives this finish that bright, almost shimmering effect. Depending on the angle you hold the tool, you can control how the light flashes across the surface. I run this in a hammer handpiece on my Foredom LX, the low speed is ideal for the hammer action hand piece. Simple process, but a very effective way to bring a surface to life. This has to be one of the favourite textures in the workshop with my students. #diamondtexture #metalsmith #foredom #jewellerytools #asmr
