MY TOP 3 TRAINING METHODS TO GET YOU FIREFIGHTER READY 👩🏻‍🚒🔥 If you’re wanting to become a Firefighter but not sure where to start with training, these are my three recommended methods to focus on. 1️⃣ STRENGTH TRAINING Our fire kit alone weighs 10kg+ then add on a 20kg+ BA set along with any other additional equipment… this is no light work! For the entry tests, you have to demonstrate a variation of lifts including ladder lifts and casualty drags. You want to ensure you’re strong enough to meet these requirements… and some! To my girls, we can’t argue with science, we need to work harder on our strength, upper body in particular, to match that of our male counterparts. Put the work in 💪🏻 2️⃣ CONDITIONING/HIIT TRAINING This type of training is a great way to prepare you for the demands of the drill yard and incidents plus improve your VO2 max. In addition, achieving a level 8.8 on the bleep test is required, this style will help with that also. By working on this style, you’re training not only your lungs and muscles, but your heart too! You will build both cardiovascular and muscular endurance which will make strenuous tasks and jobs far easier. 3️⃣ FUNCTIONAL TRAINING Much like strength but focusing on job role activity movements such as overhead push press for lifting ladders above your head, squatting and pulls to rescue casualties, lunging to roll hose. They train like bodybuilders instead of training for work capacity, endurance, and real firefighter conditioning. The academy doesn’t test how much you bench. It tests: • running • stair climbs • strength endurance • mental toughness This is the exact training structure I used to graduate #1 out of 100 recruits. I turned it into an 8-week firefighter prep program so recruits can show up ready instead of just hoping they survive. The Fireman Carry Challenge went down tonight (and with only 1 take)! 😂 I had to “rescue” Jared from a fire using the fireman carry technique (yes, I mean pick him up and carry him to safety), and spoiler alert… I DID IT! 💪💥 Ok, ok, maybe there was a teensy bit of assistance from the hubs… but hey, even with the giggles, this was a WIN in my book! You know it’s serious business when you have to pause to catch your breath and stop laughing before carrying on. 😆 Honestly, nothing says teamwork like a challenge that ends with both of us cracking up! The bowline knot is one of the most commonly used knots by firefighters. The reason for this is that the knot is both very secure and easy to untie. It creates a fixed loop at the end of the rope and does not tighten under load. Thanks to these features, it is preferred for securing a person during a fire, fastening a load, or attaching the rope to a safe point. The main reason firefighters can tie this knot in seconds is the muscle memory they gain through intensive training and repetition. The steps of the knot are very clear and are taught through a specific story: a loop is opened in the rope, the short end (the "rabbit") comes out of the hole, goes around the body of the rope (the "tree"), and goes back into the hole. This method makes the knot easy to remember and turns it into a reflex. Since time is critical in emergencies, firefighters can tie this knot automatically, without thinking. Thanks to repeated drills, their hands move as if by muscle memory.
