Soleoidei is a group of fish with a characteristically flattened body. Commonly known as Sole fish as they resemble the sole of a human. It has a dramatically flattened body which helps them blend in with the bottom. Unlike most fish, which have one eye on either side of their bodies, these creatures have both eyes on their top halves. In their larval stages they are born with eyes on either sides of its face, as they mature one of the eyes starts moving towards the other end and by the time it fully matures the eyes come to the same side this is referred to as ‘eye migration.’ The fish blends in with the sand because of its matching skin pattern. They are mostly hunted by dolphins, octopus and hammerhead sharks. This is one of the largest larval specimens I’ve ever had the pleasure of swimming with - almost 2” Typically, I see them in the .5-1” range, so this photogenic beauty was a real treat!
