A good flutter kick should align with the body at the surface to propel you straight ahead. Picture your legs inside a rectangular box: straight, initiated from the hip, rippling with a soft knee and pointed toe, like kicking a ball. Boiling white water at the surface is perfect. Splashy kicks often mean bent knees, kicking air more than water. If your feet are too deep, the water’s resistance slows your tempo, and the depth may push you up more than forward. Practice with and without fins and a board at the surface. Add dedicated kicking sets or swim sets with specific kick tempos to improve your technique and performance.

Freestyle kick, also known as flutter kick, is an alternating leg kick performed with relatively straight legs. Although, you often saw a pro-swimmer swimming freestyle with little to no kick at all, freestyle kick actually performs several functions. It’s main function is maintained your body position by keeping your hips up. By keeping your hips up, you keep your body in streamlined position and reducing the drag as you move through water. So, getting a grip of solid freestyle kick technique is a 𝗠𝗨𝗦𝗧 before you learn anything else. If you had problem to learn freestyle kick, here are some tips to do it perfectly : 1. Never initiate kick from the knees Initiate kick from the knees will only make a lot of drag. The more drag you create meaning the more energy you expend to propulse your body forward. This will make your body tired even faster. Instead, always initiate every kick from hips. 2. Try to activate your knees and ankles Even though the kicks always initiate from hips, doesn’t mean that your knees and ankles need to stay passive. Try to activate them by keeping them stay relaxed and following the hips movement. In every kick, you actually want your legs making “whip” motion. The whipping motion coming from the hips, down to the knees, and lastly down to your ankles.
This motion would most likely to be disrupted if your knees and ankles are locked in place.
𝗦𝗼, 𝗸𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺 𝗔𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗩𝗘!! 3. Don’t kick too deep Kicking too deep meaning the gap between your feet wider, this will make drag and disrupt the kick’s rhythm since it takes more time to bring your feet close to the surface again.
Maintain your feet’s gap no wider than when you’re walking in every kick. 4. Splashing all around the place is a no go Splashing doesn’t make you faster, instead it makes you even slower. Splashing means your feet are way out of the water, this way your feet actually kicking some air. It also creates more drag since your feet are quite high above the surface. Instead, you want your kick making bubble foam trace, this way only slight part of your feet that actually came out of the water

Don’t kick with your knees, kick with almost straight legs. Keep your knee joint loose and fluid, rather than stiff and locked. Keep your ankle joint loose and fluid, rather than stiff and locked. Too much bend in the knee is common, so maintain a soft knee bend. Point your toes straight back behind you to reduce drag, think about keeping your legs long and streamlined. Imagine that you are kicking your socks off to emphasize the up and down movement required for an effective flutter kick.

If your flutter kick feels tiring, awkward, or slow, this might be why. A lot of swimmers fall into one of these two mistakes. Octopus = too much bend in the knees, with the heels kicking up toward the butt. That creates a messy kick with too much lower leg movement and not enough control. Penguin = legs stay too stiff and the ankles are flexed. That makes the kick rigid, heavy, and hard to move through the water smoothly. What you want is a Bucket Kick. Kick from the hips, keep the legs relaxed, and point the toes. The movement should be narrow, smooth, controlled, and steady as if you were kicking in a bucket.
