What if I told you this isn’t about how your child talks—but how their brain organizes sounds? Watch closely: For “tar,” my tongue tip lifts in the front for /t/. For “car,” the back of my tongue lifts for /k/. If your child swaps /k/ for /t/, but can physically make both sounds—this isn’t an articulation issue. It’s a phonological error. That means their mouth can do it… but their brain hasn’t sorted when to do it. This is called fronting. 👇🏼 Fronting is a super common phonological process where kids replace back sounds (like “k” and “g”) with front sounds (like “t” and “d”). For example, saying “tar” instead of “car” or “doe” instead of “go.” It’s typical in toddlers and usually fades by 3.5 to 4 years old. If it sticks around longer, a speech therapist can help. 🙌🏼 At home tips: ✔️ Model the correct sound: “It’s a car! Cc-car!” ✔️ Use a mirror to show tongue placement. ✔️ Try sound cues: “K is the coughing sound!” ✔️Use visual and auditory cues: show a picture of tea for the front sound and a picture of a key for the back sound. See if they can hear the difference 👂

‼️Read the caption‼️ Stories are a powerful, motivating context for making meaningful contrasts. This is a good example, too, of how you might get a lot of bang for your buck out of a mixed group session! And, of course, my @bjoremspeech @adventuresinspeechpathology minimal pairs cards eliminate the prep and making sessions vibrant, fun and engaging! Here are a couple more tips you might find helpful: 💡Minimal pairs are most seamlessly inserted in to stories if the minimal pairs are of the same part of speech (noun-noun, verb-verb, etc.), although not required. 💡The natural nature of pragmatic cuing make it incredibly useful and effective when using minimal pairs AND storytelling (narrative language) tasks. It’s simple, but don’t miss out on using it! 💡Don’t feel like you need to load the story with too many target. I usually stick to 3-4 (unless the child has demonstrated that he/she is consistently accurate and has demonstrated the ability to manage more). 💡Save time and $$.
