THIntroduce the magic of capillary action to eager minds with this cool water experiment. It’s not just for children - everyone can be mesmerized by this visually pleasuring activity.
⭕ Materials:
- Transparent cups
- Water
- Food colouring (multiple colours)
- Paper towels
⭕ Instructions:
(1) Fill alternate cups with water and add different food colouring to each.
(2) Fold a paper towel in half, and again into a strip.
(3) Place one end of the strip in a water-filled cup and the other end in an empty cup next to it.
(4) Watch as the water begins to “walk” from one cup to the next, carrying its colour with it!
(5) Over time, see the water levels rise and colours mix in the middle cups.
⭕ Science Explained:
This captivating experiment demonstrates capillary action. The paper towels are made of fibres, which, due to their nature, can pull water upward, against the force of gravity. As the coloured water travels through the fibres, it moves from one cup to another, leading to a delightful mix of colours in the middle. It’s like art and science combined!
