ME!' Baby, there are SHARKS. 'I KNOW! That's why we're here!' Fair point. The cage: Steel bars. Lowered into ocean. VERY secure. (I asked 47 times.) We climbed in: Wetsuits. Masks. Life vests. Holding onto bars. Daughter: excited. Me: terrified. The wait: 90 seconds. Then: SHARK. MASSIVE. Maybe 4 meters. Swimming STRAIGHT at cage. My daughter: 'MAMA! BIG FISH!' That's not a fish, baby. That's a SHARK. 'BIG SHARK!' The shark: Circled the cage. Maybe 2 meters away. Eye visible. Teeth visible. Everything: visible. My daughter: WAVED. At. The. Shark. 'Hi Mr. Shark!' Baby, the shark can't hear you! 'I'm being POLITE!' The dive master laughed: 'Smallest person, biggest courage!' The shark: Swam past three times. Each time: my heart stopped. Each time: my daughter waved. She asked: 'Why does he have SO MANY teeth?' For eating, baby. 'Eating WHAT?' Seals, mostly. 'Oh. Does he want to eat US?' No, we're in a cage. 'Good cage!' Back on boat: My daughter: 'THAT WAS AMAZING!' Me: still shaking. Captain: 'Your daughter very brave!' Or very reckless. Hard to tell. My daughter: 'Can we go again?' NO. Once is enough. 'But I didn't get to TOUCH one!' Baby, you NEVER touch great whites. 'Why not?' A place where shark divers and ocean lovers could head out on the water and have an almost guaranteed sighting of these apex predators. But over the last decade, everything has changed. The once-thriving great white population has seen a drastic decline. 🤔 So what is happened? You’ll pay the entrance fee then drive through the reserve to a small lot 🪨 Down the stairs to the left are the Klipgat caves which were inhabited around 50,000 years ago (!!!) - definitely worth the climb over the rocks to see them 🏖 To the right down the stairs is a huge empty beach where you can bring a towel, snacks, etc & spend the day!
