A huge part of the Youth Foyer programs is Social Connections and these camps support young people in a safe environment in developing independent respectful relationships and confidence for connecting to community. Last week Shepp Salvos in partnership with GoTafe hosted a forum with a panel of speakers from local service providers and a lived experience young person for National Homelessness Week 👏 While I do wish we could have heard more from the panel themselves (and not so much other impromptu speakers - IYKYK) it was a brilliant opportunity to open a dialogue around such an important topic, hear the powerful lived experience of a young person that has survived and thrived through their story, and to learn from those who directly work in this crisis everyday. Housing is a critical issue, especially in our community, and as a basic human right we should be doing everything we can to fix it. We need more housing, increased affordable and social stock, and way more diversity in options (standard housing developments are not the answer). And local government has a direct role to play in finding solutions and removing barriers. I am proud to have supported every social housing development that we have had come to us, and it is one of my greatest disappointments in my term on council that not all Councillors voted the same. Most projects don’t even come to council as they exist on private land and quietly sneak through without any concern, but in the moments when they do it becomes an intense community discussion and is truly a matter of will to say yes. Action speaks louder than words, and I hope the next cohort of councillors will have the courage to say yes when they have the chance to make a positive difference for those who need it most. I know I will 🩷 P.S: Jasmine you smashed it and I’ll carry your story with me always. Thankyou for your bravery in sharing your experience with that room.
