SHPaid tribute to revolutionary first freedom fighter Rani Kittur Chennamma on 201st Vijayotsava Day in Parliament House in New Delhi
I was completely mesmerised by the heroic tale of Kittur Rani Chennamma. I found her patriotism, her confidence, and her resilience so amazing, that I have read her tale of bravado hundreds of times. And I have felt inspired at every occasion!
For a small kingdom like Kittur, locking horns with the mighty British Empire is no small thing. It displayed immense courage and dare-devilry. But most importantly, it showcased the attachment and love and attachment for one’s motherland. All these virtues have epitomised Rani Chennamma among the patriots of our country.
201 years ago in the year 1824, on the 22nd of October while Kittur was busy celebrating the festivities of Ayudha Pooja, it was attacked by Thackeray. Without heeding to any pressure, the valorant Rani Chennamma collided head-on with the British army of St John Thackeray. She fought so bravely that she indeed decimated the army of Thackeray. It seemed like an offering of enemy lives was made to The Almighty on the day of Mahanavami. The beating handed by Rani Chennamma was so intense that British East India Company was shaken in its very foundation. Such is the valour of this great soul Rani Chennamma of Kittur.
I very humbly request you all to read about her. Narrate her story to your children, explain to them about her life, her courage and her resilience. 23rd of October is celebrated as the Vijayotsava of Rani Chennamma, and 24th October is the auspicious day of Durga Ashtami. I pray that Rani Chennamma appears in the Avatar of Durga and destroys this Corona pandemic and frees us from its deadly clutches.
Let us all fold our hands together in prayer for the Valorant, Kittur Rani Chennamma and commemorate Kittur’s Vijayotsava.
I pray for one and all to receive divinity and prosperity on this Durga Ashtami.
