The City of St Dimitrius... Thessaloniki ♥️ 26th October...we celebrate ☦️☦️☦️ The holy, glorious and right-victorious Great-martyr (Greek: Μεγαλομάρτυς) Demetrius of Thessaloniki the Myrrh-streamer (Greek Μυροβλήτης) (also Demetrios) is one of the most popular saints in the Orthodox world. He was martyred around the year 306 in Thessalonica, and his cult rapidly grew during the Middle Ages, when he was regarded as the first recognized patron and protector of the city, militarily as well as spiritually. His feast day is celebrated on October 26. The Serbian Orthodox Church commemorates the Saint as a Mitar having a feast of Mitrovan on November 8. St. Demetrius is revered as the patron saint of Thessaloniki and is believed by the people as having intervened to save the city over the years from invading foreigners, from the Slavic nations, Bulgarians, Arabs, Saracens, and others. While well remembered in the Hellenic world, the memory of the Great Martyr Demetrius of Thessaloniki found an attachment in the Slavic, particularly the Russian, world from the times of the Russian Primary Chronicle. At the foot of Mount Parnassos, within the angle formed by the twin rocks of the Phaedriades, lies the Pan-Hellenic sanctuary of Delphi, which had the most famous oracle of ancient Greece. Delphi was regarded as the centre of the world. According to mythology, it is here that the two eagles sent out by Zeus from the ends of the universe to find the navel of the world met. The sanctuary of Delphi, set within a most spectacular landscape, was for many centuries the cultural and religious centre and symbol of unity for the Hellenic world. History of Delphi begins in prehistory and in the myths of the ancient Greeks. In the beginning the site was sacred to Mother Earth and was guarded by the terrible serpent Python, who was later killed by Apollo. Apollo's sanctuary was built here by Cretans who arrived at Kirrha, the port of Delphi, accompanied by the god in the form of a dolphin. This myth survived in plays presented during the various Delphic festivals, such as Septerion, Delphinia, Thargelia, Theophania and of course famous Pythia, which celebrated the death of Python and comprised musical and athletic competitions. Earliest finds in the area of Delphi, which date to the Neolithic period (4000 BC), come from the Korykeion Andron, a cave on Parnassos, where the first rituals took place. The remains of a Mycenaean settlement and cemetery were discovered within the sanctuary, but traces of occupation are rare and very fragmentary until 8th Century BC, when the cult of Apollo was established and the development of the sanctuary and the oracle began. The first stone temples of Apollo and Athena, who was also officially venerated under the name of “Pronaia” or “Pronoia” and had her own sanctuary, were built towards the end of 7th Century BC. According to literary and archaeological evidence other gods were associated with the sanctuary; these included Artemis, Poseidon, Dionysus, Hermes, Zeus Polieus, Hygeia and Eileithyia. 🎥 : Credit to the Owner #archaeohistories #greece #oracle #delphi #reels #greekhistory #ancientgreece #facts

Mithridates or Mithradates VI Eupator 135–63 BC was ruler of the Hellenistic Kingdom of Pontus in northern Anatolia from 120 to 63 BC, and one of the Roman Republic's most formidable and determined opponents. He was an effective, ambitious and ruthless ruler who sought to dominate Asia Minor and the Black Sea region, waging several hard-fought but ultimately unsuccessful wars (the Mithridatic Wars) to break Roman dominion over Asia and the Hellenic world. He has been called the greatest ruler of the Kingdom of Pontus. After his death he became known as Mithridates the Great; due to his affinity for poison he has also been called "The Poison King". #numismatist #numismatic #tetradrachm   #münze #tetradrachme #coincollecting #coinsofinstagram #mithradatesvi #ancientcoins #mithridatesvI #moedasantigas #numismatik  #münzen #pontus #eupator #coin  #alexanderthegreat #antikemünzen #diadochen #mithridaticwars #consulate #sulla #romanrepublic #greekcoins #griechischemünzen #instacoins #coinphoto #монеты #монета <a href="https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Sting">Sting</a>, <a href="https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mithridates_VI_Louvre.jpg#mw-jump-to-license">Mithridates VI Louvre</a>, Tetradrachm Mithradates VI. von Münzen am Zoo , <a href="https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.5/legalcode" rel="license">CC BY-SA 2.5</a>

You can’t imagine how happy I am to be arriving at sundown on one of my favourite islands in the Mediterranean. Hello from Sicily! Island of my youth where summers were spent moving from one cove to another swimming under the glorious Mediterranean sun. The Greeks love it here and so did the Roman, Carthaginian and the Phoenicians. Sicily is not your idea of a picture postcard beauty like that of Capri, the Amalfi and Puglia but this biggest island in the Mediterranean and of which al-Idrisi once described Palermo as the most beautiful city of the Hellenic world and the Middle Ages- I can see it. Sometimes you need to dig slightly deeper to see a beauty of a place. I’ve not been back since my teens and days at uni so you can imagine how excited I am to be seeing the place 20 odd years later! Ciao Bella from Palermo 🤍

Ex Ponterio & Associates, NYINC Sale 152 (8 January 2010), lot 5832 The evocative coinage of Mende illustrates some long-forgotten myth regarding Dionysus, the Greek god of wine and revelry, and the patron god of the city. Mende was famous as a center of wine production, as evidenced by numerous amphorae bearing the city’s stamp found throughout the Hellenic world. Although Dionysus is usually depicted in procession riding in a chariot pulled by panthers, on coins of Mende he is shown with a more humble form of transportation, reclining languidly on the back on an ass, clutching a high-handled wine cup and appearing pleasantly inebriated. An ordinary farmer finalized his message, found a career that matched, and drafted out documents -- on lead tablets, no less -- to take him into a different future. But was all that work for naught? This is the 6th of 7 days' posts about one of my personal heroes, an obscure farm owner in ancient Greece named Hesiod. Hesiod got unstuck from a life of frustration and unhappiness by (1) uncovering a personal message of meaning, (2) finding a vocation that aligned with his unique gifts, and (3) tediously drafting manifestos that were the blueprints for fulfilling his mission. Those documents were ultimately what gave him the ability to step into a brand new professional life. That last point, btw, is pivotal. Since he had no training in his newly chosen profession (epic poet), Hesiod did not have access to knowledge about the art of memorization. It's believed that those written documents were put together to help his poetry get from idea stage into a place where he could go and deliver them around the world. The detailed planning and preparation stage was essential. Writing down a plan that documents your own mission, then tying it to the poem that you want your own life to become, is the modern (less tortuous) equivalent of Hesiod toiling away on lead tablets. In his new life, Hesiod ultimately became a legend throughout the Hellenic world. His poems helped shape the very foundations of Greek religion, revolutionized literature, and, to this day, both inspire devotion and defy categorization. His success and legacy are wildly beyond what he might have ever experienced as a mere farmer.  THAT joyful life is the definition of professional freedom. His story has changed my own view of possibility. Does it do the same for you? Let us know in the comments below. If you'd like to have a deeper conversation about magnetizing and monetizing professional freedom, by dislodging your toxic myths and igniting the #charisma within, set up a complimentary 1:1 using the calendar link in my bio.
