These past few months have been the hardest we’ve ever faced, but being his caretakers through this journey has also been one of the greatest honors of our lives. Right now Graffiti is doing well, enjoying his routines and the simple moments that mean everything. Thank you for every prayer, kind message, and hopeful thought you’ve sent his way. It’s been two weeks since we said goodbye to Bowen. We still expect her presence everywhere and with every aspect of our day and routine. It still doesn’t feel real that she’s gone. We miss her so much. 💔 I started making this little series of “things I never want to forget about my senior dog” before we even received Bowen’s diagnosis. These clips are all from her final weeks after her hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. They bring me so much joy, but also sadness and confusion as she still seemed to be her normal self and so full of life. A month ago today, we rushed Coco to emergency after she collapsed. She'd been unwell on and off for a week, but I thought she just had an upset stomach. In that same week we went on walks, to the beach, and she ate and played normally. She had so much energy and vitality but beneath it...her body was fighting a silent battle, failing as her organs were shutting down from late stage cancer. When we took her to emergency her gums were pale, her breathing laboured, heart-rate elevated, and her abdomen distended. Bloodwork and scans revealed she was severely anaemic, bleeding internally. A large tumour was found on her liver and the rest of her organs couldn't be seen on the scans due to the amount of fluid in her abdomen. It meant that they couldn't rule out other tumors unless they opened her up. We suspect it was hemangiosarcoma—the silent killer. Hemangiosarcoma is an aggressive cancer that spreads like wildfire. It almost always goes undetected until a sudden rupture, and the prognosis is heartbreaking; the chances of survival are devastatingly low and even with surgery and chemotherapy, it is usually just weeks or months. In Coco's case, surgery was very high-risk and even if she made it through she would have needed a blood transfusion, which was not available in our local area. She'd also had a seizure following her routine dental 2 months prior, so the likelihood of survival was little to none. We were faced with an impossible decision. At 4.30am, I held her in my arms and said goodbye yet she was oblivious. Trying to explain it to her was harrowing because she looked ready to go home. I spent less than 45 minutes with her before she was gone. She fought through so much in her life—glaucoma, multiple surgeries, a dog attack that nearly killed her in October, unexplained seizures—and she always pulled through. This time though it was out of our hands. I lose her all over again every single day and it's heartbreaking. Coco wasn’t just a dog—she was my anchor and best friend. I wish I had more time. I wish I got to watch her grow old. And I wish there was something, anything I could do to have her back.

Here’s the story about a Rhodesian Ridgeback who was one month away from 13 years old and survived two years to the day with primary hepatic hemangiosarcoma, an aggressive cancer that has a 4-6 month prognosis.⁠ ⁠ I did a post in July of last year about how Chloe was an amazing pup who beat the median survival time, but by December of last year, it was time for her to run in the fields of heaven.⁠ ⁠ Chloe was a miracle dog, with so much help from her super-veterinarian mom - @drlisalippman.⁠ ⁠ Chloe received doxorubicin chemotherapy every three weeks for six treatments with me and received other integrative treatments with other specialists. Last week really tested us and honestly it took everything we had. We were stretched in ways we haven’t been before. But the way Graffiti recovered and showed us how strong he is, how much he still wants to be here, has been incredible to witness. There were parts we didn’t include in the video because some moments were just too raw. It made us realize how important support is at this stage. There was a moment that shook us, and showed us we shouldn’t be navigating this alone. Bringing professional hospice support into our home has changed how we’re approaching this, and it gives us a steadier foundation if things shift again. Since the bleed last Wednesday, we’ve watched Graffiti grow stronger every day. Brighter eyes, steadier energy, more engagement, more him. We’ve seen him rebound once before, and watching him rebuild again reminds us exactly who he is. He’s steady. He’s resilient. He’s pressing forward on his own terms. He’s a warrior. 🤍 We know we’re in a serious place right now. We’re not ignoring that. But we will meet whatever comes with clarity, and his comfort will always come before anything else. So much more time than we ever expected. From diagnosis to fast treatment – the timing made all the difference. Lenni lived far beyond his prognosis. And now, as we are nearing the end, I can say with all my heart: I would choose #chemotherapy again. From our experience in Italy: oncologists often work as freelancer docs, travelling from clinic to clinic – even to smaller veterinary practices. This made treatment accessible so much faster. In Germany, from what I’ve heard and researched, specialist centres are fewer and waiting lists can be long. And timing matters so much – especially with aggressive tumours. #hemangiosarcoma Based on our journey, I would encourage every dog owner: 👉 Have your pet’s organs scanned more regularly once they reach a certain age – if possible. The one thing that people don’t know about Hemangiosarcoma is that it is NOT an immediate death sentence. If there is one thing you take away from my videos i want you to know that if your dog is diagnosed with this cancer and is in no pain or distress please do not put them down. I know this is a personal choice for every dog parent but there are supplements and treatments that can prolong their life while not impacting their quality of life. These are not curative but can help with symptoms. With Lyla’s third episode we were face with the decision to either let her go or put her through a surgery that would give her an extra week of living. Hemangiosarcoma is one of the most challenging cancers we face in Golden Retrievers. Unlike single-gene disorders with a straightforward DNA test, hemangiosarcoma risk is polygenic — influenced by multiple genetic regions working together. That means there isn’t a simple “yes or no” test for breeders to use yet. What we can do today is focus on the factors that truly make a difference: • Multi-gene risk research: Ongoing studies at the Broad Institute, University of Minnesota, and the Golden Retriever Lifetime Study are identifying genetic regions associated with increased risk. This is where future multi-gene risk assessments will come from. • Longevity in breeding lines: One of the strongest indicators of reduced cancer risk is proven longevity in a pedigree. We pay very close attention to dogs and ancestors who lived well into their senior years (12–14+). Long-lived lines matter. • Lowering COI (Coefficient of Inbreeding): Higher COIs can increase expression of harmful recessives and reduce genetic diversity. We work to keep COIs as low as possible in our pairings while still preserving working ability and type — a balance that supports long-term health. Research is moving in the right direction, but early detection is still difficult. Hemangiosarcoma often shows no symptoms until internal bleeding occurs. Subtle signs may include pale gums, fatigue, or weakness that comes and goes. Emergency signs include collapse, labored breathing, abdominal swelling, or coughing blood. We experienced this firsthand with our own girl, Birdie, whose symptoms appeared suddenly despite being energetic and healthy right up until that day. Her diagnosis was confirmed with a liquid biopsy — a test that detects existing cancer, not future risk — and we made the difficult decision to let her go that night. Our goal in sharing this is education, not fear. I received the results on Monday, but I didn’t have a chance to post till now. So he definitively is anemia. I feel like those remained masses in liver that couldn’t get removed from the surgery, are now getting active after stopped chemotherapy… Getting images are expensive, but I will know what’s really going on inside his body. But at the same time, it might just make me sad to know what he’s going through right now… and I don’t know if I can handle if the vet tells me again that there’s nothing we can do for him anymore…😖 #Hemangiosarcoma #CanineCancer #Corgi
