High functioning depression has two sides. Behind closed doors people struggle with imposter syndrome, guilt and feelings of inadequacy. To the world they look like they are successful “rock stars”. Seeking help for depression is a brave act and not a sign of weakness. Consult with your provider to find the best treatment options for you. #highfunctioningdepression #depression #highfunctioning #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #psychiatry

⏳ You need to know this about high functioning depression: The term itself is not a clinical diagnosis, but a term that has been used online to describe the experience of those who live with depressive symptoms and struggle to function but don’t cease to function. • This term is pretty useful as many people have a pre-conceived idea that good mental health is all about whether you can still get to work or not. They often feel undeserving of any support because they are not outwardly at rock bottom. • If you take one thing away from this video, let it be that the best time to start doing the right things for your mental health is the moment you think you could benefit from it. • Don’t wait until your mental health prevents you from functioning. That is a much longer and harder journey back. Feel free to share @drjulie ❤️ 👉More on this in my million copy bestselling book - Why Has Nobody Told Me This Before? (Currently -50% see link in bio). What’s often called “high functioning” isn’t always functioning well. It’s often compensation. Many people who get labeled as “high functioning” are actually 2e (twice exceptional) — gifted (IQ 98th+ percentile) and living with a learning or developmental disability (ADHD, Autism, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, AuDHD, etc.) High ability can hide struggle. Strong output can mask regulation issues. Especially in females. That’s where overlap matters. This diagram doesn’t show diagnoses — it shows shared traits that exist across ADHD, autism, and giftedness. You can have a shared trait and only fall in one category. Those overlaps are why: • ADHD can be missed • Autism can be misunderstood • AuDHD can feel close but not quite right for some • And 2e often goes unnamed Overlap doesn’t mean the same nervous system. And “high functioning” doesn’t mean well supported. This isn’t about replacing labels. It’s about understanding why so many people never felt fully explained. High functioning CPTSD can be dangerous. You show up. You perform. You cope. So no one checks on you. No one sees the nervous system that’s still in survival. 👉 Don’t ignore the last one. Now, there is an important reason I made this video when high functioning depression is not a clinical diagnosis. The term is being used across the Internet as people search for the language to describe their daily struggles with mental health. I think what this term has enabled many people to do, is acknowledge that depression does not begin on the day that you can’t get out of bed. You can be suffering intensely while going about your normal daily routine. If we wait until we cannot function before seeking help or working on recovery, we have a much bigger battle on our hands. So even if everyone in your life has no idea, the best time to work on your mental health is as soon as you notice these changes. 👉 For more on this you can pre-order my new book - Open When… (link in bio) or if you don’t have it already check out my million copy bestselling book - Why Has Nobody Told Me This Before? Dr. Sara Kohlbeck, a leading researcher in suicide prevention and psychiatry, explains how many individuals continue to show up for their lives while silently struggling. You may be going to work every day, caring for your children, and performing well in your career, all while carrying the heavy weight of these thoughts. This "masking" is often a function of anxiety or the desire not to be a burden to those you love. You might find yourself showing up for everyone else even when you feel unable to show up for yourself. It is important to look past the stereotypes of what a mental health crisis "looks like." Understanding that high functioning suicidal ideation exists is the first step toward healing. If you or someone you know is putting on a mask to get through the day, please remember that support is available and you don't have to carry this alone. #suicideprevention #suicideawareness #recoveryispossible #RecoverySupport #youarenotalone

1. You can be extremely productive and deeply dysregulated at the same time. Productivity doesn’t mean your nervous system is okay. It often just means you’ve learned how to operate while disconnected from your own signals. 2. Many high-achieving people don’t know who they are outside of what they do. When your identity forms around performance and productivity, slowing down can create a sense of disorientation. Without constant output, you lose the structure you relied on for safety and self-definition. 3. People often confuse anxiety with responsibility. Constant vigilance can look like competence, but internally, it’s often driven by a nervous system that doesn’t feel safe unless everything is accounted for. 4. Burnout recovery is not just physical. It’s identity-level. It requires redefining who you are outside of constant output and resilience. 5. Overfunctioning is one of the most socially rewarded trauma responses. People praise you for being reliable, capable, and always handling everything. No one sees that it comes at the cost of your nervous system. 6. Many people don’t realize how much of their life is driven by fear of falling behind. That fear quietly shapes decisions, pace, and capacity. 7. Being “high functioning” is often just being better at ignoring your own limits. You still feel the exhaustion, the overwhelm, and the strain. You’ve just learned how to override it long enough that no one else notices. 8. You cannot heal burnout by becoming more disciplined. Burnout isn’t caused by a lack of effort. It’s caused by prolonged nervous system overload. Healing requires reducing chronic activation and increasing safety, not pushing yourself harder. 9. Feeling constantly “on” is not your personality. It’s your nervous system state. ✨ Follow me @talkingwithmorgan for more on anxiety & burnout 🚫 Instagram is not a substitute for therapy.
