Rock pool exploring always comes with surprises… I love spending time exploring the intertidal zone at Gericke’s Point here in Sedgefield — there’s always something new to discover. Today, to my surprise, I came across a Spotted Sea Hare slowly shifting its large mollusc foot across the algae-covered rocky outcrops inside one of the rock pools. Sea hares are large marine sea slugs that graze on algae and play an important role in keeping intertidal ecosystems in balance. Moments like these are a reminder of how much life exists in the small spaces between the tides. #intertidalzone #rockpools #sealife #gardenroute #sedgefield oceanlife 🌊🐚

Life in the intertidal zone is adapted to constantly changing conditions. As the ocean rises and falls with the tides, the species that call the this area (between the lowest low tide and the highest high tide) deal with constant change! Barnacles, muscles, sea anemones, limpets, sea stars, rockweed, and much more have special adaptations to thrive here. Smashing waves, salty water, underwater, above water, predators, and changing temperates are some of the daily challenges that intertidal life face. Barnacles are animals that attach themselves onto surfaces, such as rocks in the intertidal zone. They are able to close their doors when the tide drops and they’re exposed to the air to ensure they don’t dry out. When the tide rises and they are submerged underwater, they open up their doors and wave their feathery-looking foot to capture and consume plankton floating by! #intertidal #tofino #britishcolumbia #vancouverisland #pacificnorthwest #naturalist #barnacle #staycurious

Tiger of the tidepools? 🪸 Since yesterday was World Fisheries Day, here’s a look at one of Mumbai’s keystone coral species. The Indian sea plume (or fan) is an intertidal icon, a soft coral that goes HARD in stocking our seas with fish. Corals form perfect nurseries for fish on the sheltered shore, from which they can return the open ocean as adults. Sea plumes can be ghostly white or somehow ghostlier red. These are colonial animals, meaning each tree-like structure you see is built by hundreds of tiny individual animals who live in the ridges and holes. The black tips are of dead or abandoned structures. Do not lift or disturb live sea plumes - it’s bad for them, and can land you in jail. The one I’ve briefly handled in the reel is an abandoned structure found in bycatch.
