The Karate Kid (2010) is the martial arts remake (technically the fifth film in the franchise) of the 1984 classic. Directed by Harald Zwart, it stars Jaden Smith as 12-year-old Dre Parker and Jackie Chan as Mr. Han, with Taraji P. Henson as Dre’s mother Sherry. It was released on June 11, 2010, and grossed over $359 million on a $40 million budget.
Dre Parker, a cocky kid from Detroit, moves to Beijing, China, with his widowed mother for her new job. Culture shock hits hard—he struggles to fit in, develops a crush on a classmate (Mei Ying, played by Wenwen Han), and quickly makes an enemy of the school bully Cheng (Zhenwei Wang) and his gang of kung fu-trained kids.
After getting picked on repeatedly, Dre befriends the unassuming apartment maintenance man Mr. Han, who turns out to be a kung fu master. What starts as reluctant training (with some very creative, non-traditional methods) becomes a journey of discipline, respect, and self-defense as Dre prepares for a big martial arts tournament.
It’s a coming-of-age story with heavy themes of bullying, cultural adaptation, perseverance, and mentorship.
