“👇DETAILS & BEST STOPS👇 This is probably my new favorite road trip but it’s important to plan ahead! If you don’t, you could end up broken down with no one in sight, or could miss the best spots. Here’s what to know: 📌First, SAVE this for when you’re in Nevada, and SEND to a friend you’re doing this roadtrip with! ⏰How long it takes⏰ This is the Nevada portion of Highway 50. Driving the road end-to-end only takes about 5 hours, but with SO MANY stops along the way, I think 3 days is the right amount of time. I only gave it 2 days and had to make a lot of hard decisions about what to skip :( 👷🏻‍♀️Safety tips👷🏻‍♀️ Because the road can be desolate, it’s important to make sure your car is in good condition, have water and food, and have a plan if you get a flat tire or need to be towed. Flag gas stations on the map and make sure to fill up when you pass them. 🏞Best stops🏞 There are so many good places to stop on this trip! Here are my top recommendations, that you can find and flag in Google Maps: - Great Basin National Park - Baker and the Stargazer and Bristlecone General Store - Ely to ride the champagne & stars train ride and see the US 50 sign - Eureka - The Shoe Tree - Jackson House Hotel - Spencer Hot Springs - Austin for an overnight and a little shopping - Sand Mountain sand dunes - Republic of Molossia - Virginia City - The Kit Carson Trail 🌱Leave no trace🌱 When you hike to the sand dunes, hot springs, national park, or anywhere outdoors, be sure to treat the area and wildlife with respect, dispose of waste properly, and leave it better than you found it.”    🎥 + ✍️: @sarahwoodardtravels

Fremont Cottonwood   Westward expansion brought Europeans and their American-born descendants to the territory we now call Nevada. Among them was John Charles Frémont. He may be better known as a politician and the first ever Republican presidential nominee (he lost the election to Democrat, James Buchanan). However, he was also topographer, geologist, mathematician, and botanist. His diary describes how he and Kit Carson found a cottonwood grove, while looking for a suitable place to camp, near Pyramid Lake.   Since Fremont cottonwoods grow in riparian areas, they are a sign of water in arid lands, and that is certainly how Fremont described them. They were “harbingers of a better country”. Indeed, riparian habitats occupied by these trees add diversity to the arid and semiarid environments of the American Southwest and provide valuable habitat for many species of birds and other wildlife, and shade for domestic livestock.   Fremont cottonwoods grow quickly early on, which makes them well suited for revegetating riparian sites.   Mature Fremont cottonwoods are top-killed by moderate fire. The cambium layer is damaged by even low-severity surface fire. Yet they can resprout from the bole, depending on fire severity.   Native Americans ate the inner bark of Fremont cottonwood to prevent scurvy. Bark and leaves were also used to make poultices to relieve swelling, treat cuts, cure headaches, wash broken limbs, and to treat saddle sores and swollen legs of horses.   Sources: D. C.
