The Little Blue Penguin (Korora in Māori) are only around 30cm tall and live for around 10 years (the oldest recorded age at this Colony was 21!!)
They swim up to 50km a day & dive around 800 times a day during breeding season to make sure their chicks are well fed 🤯
We recommend the evening session so you can see the penguin arrive after a day out in the ocean. Note that between Jan-March they stay ashore for their annual moult so you likely won’t see them in the water.

Meet Tamāroa, one of our youngest kororā (little penguins) - the smallest penguin species in the world! Native to New Zealand and Australia, these tiny penguins are renowned for their variety of vocalisations, which they use to communicate, warn off predators, or signal the presence of prey.
Kororā are the most common penguins found along New Zealand’s mainland coasts and surrounding islands. Primarily nocturnal on land, they often nest dunes, coastal forest, farmland and rocky areas up to 200m inland.
In the wild kororā usually stay within a few kms of the shore while foraging, feeding on slender sprat, red cod, ahuru, arrow squid, and Graham’s gudgeon. Their skill in navigating the ocean highlight just how extraordinary these birds are.

Annika Schoenhardt’s For the Star Chasers receives its world premiere this season. Born and raised in Edmonton, Annika is a Canadian Improv Games alum whose love of storytelling carries into her music. She sings with Korora Youth Choir and developed this winning work through the Young Composers Project, where she was mentored by composer John Estacio and took on the challenge of writing for a full symphony orchestra.
Her piece will be performed as part of ESO New Music series.

Need a reason to care more about little penguins/kororā? Here’s a clip that may do the trick, check out the wee squeak and happy feet 🐧
Most people love penguins, while others don’t give them much thought. Given they are tiny, nocturnal, and that few remain in Kaikōura, kororā are not necessarily visible and at the forefront of our collective minds.
In Kaikōura kororā extinction is of real concern. Starvation due to decreased ocean productivity from human impacts (climate change and overfishing) has driven rapid declines, compounded by cumulative threats.
However, we can all help kororā to survive in challenging times by: Opting to keep away from vulnerable remnant breeding sites (i.e. minimising visitor disturbance); not promoting penguin sites; driving carefully at dusk near known habitat; keeping dogs under control at beaches; containing cats indoors from dusk to dawn where penguins persist nearby; undertaking backyard trapping in coastal areas; minimising lighting impacts in residential areas adjacent to the sea; removing marine debris from beaches (e.g. entanglement risks); adhering to inshore boating speed limits (e.g. preventing boat strike); not discarding fishing gear; taking only what we need when fishing (vs filling freezers); and reporting unwell beachcast penguins for immediate handover.
By being a bit more mindful we can give declining kororā (and other inshore species) a chance at survival 🩵
