明けましておめでとうございます。
今年の制作は、サビ付けからです。
我が家は子供とわたしが卒業間近なので、制作や受験勉強にと元旦から普段通りです。
動画は拭き漆の最初の工程「木地固め」
普通の拭き漆と方法は同じです。
違うのは、生漆の浸透を良くするため溶剤(ホワイトガソリン)を加えること。
「木地固め」は1-3回するそう。
先生方それぞれでベストな回数が違うので、なんとなく木地が厚めの時は2回で、大きい時は3回かな？と思いつつ塗ってます。
木地固めの後は乾研ぎします。
あと、これは私のこだわりとして乾研ぎの後で目擦り漆をつけて目止めします。お椀やコップは必ずしてます。
そこまで終わるとあとは漆を重ねていくだけです。

My son and I are about to graduate, so we are busy creating and studying for exams.
The video shows the first process of wipe lacquer, " Wood hardening".
The method is the same as the normal " wipe lacquer" process.
The difference is that a solvent (white gasoline) is added to improve the penetration of raw lacquer.
Depending on the case, the "hardening" process may take 1-3 coats.
I use two coats when the wood is thicker and three coats when the wood is larger.
After hardening the wood, dry sandpaper.
Also, and this is my obsession, after dry sanding, I put a fine lacquer paste (Sabi) on the surface to seal it.This is always done for bowls and cups.
Once that is done, we just add layers of lacquer.

Kintsugi is the centuries-old Japanese method of repairing broken pottery with lacquer mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum. Instead of hiding cracks, the repair turns them into the most beautiful part of the piece.
2. 👑 It Was Born From a Shogun’s Broken Bowl
Legend says in the 1400s, Ashikaga Yoshimasa sent a broken tea bowl to China for repair. It came back held together with ugly metal staples. Japanese craftsmen decided they could do something far better — repairing it with gold.
3. 🧠 It’s Built On A Deep Philosophy
Kintsugi reflects the Japanese philosophy of Wabi-Sabi — the idea that imperfection, damage, and age make something MORE beautiful, not less.
4. ⏳ The Process Is Slow And Precise
The pieces are glued with natural lacquer called Urushi lacquer, then the cracks are dusted with gold powder. Each repair can take weeks or even months because the lacquer must cure slowly.
5. 🔥 The Bowl Becomes More Valuable After Breaking
In some cases, a repaired kintsugi bowl becomes more valuable than it was before it broke, because its “gold scars” tell a story that a perfect bowl never could.

GAAcetone is effective at dissolving certain finishes like shellac, lacquer and some varnishes but it does not break down cured paint. This piece was coated in old, layered paint (likely oil-based or factory enamel), so even after soaking for about 20 minutes, the paint only softened slightly and did not release.
When acetone doesn’t work, it’s a sign that chemical stripper, scraping, or sanding is the correct next step.

ARWalking With Lacquer is a Chinese artist who practices drifting lacquer marbling, a traditional water-based technique related to Chinese floating lacquer art. He gently releases colored lacquer and pigments onto the surface of water, then manipulates them through dotting, flicking and swirling motions until flowing patterns begin to form.
When a cotton bag or surface is lifted from the water, the floating pigments settle into place, revealing dreamlike landscapes that resemble mountains, rivers and misty horizons.
