KEI have been doing private sessions with Simba for a little less than a year. He had one session with another trainer that did nothing but hang him up on a prong so the owners decided to come and do a consultation with me. He came muzzled did not have any obedience besides a sit command and would redirect on whoever was holding the leash when feeling any type leash pressure. We worked on many things did park trips, obedience, reactivity, and just trying to make things more clear to him and gain his trust. Him and his family are moving to Mexico and I could honestly say I will miss working with him. I am grateful that I was able to watch him transform into an amazing dog and thank the family for putting their trust in me and allowing me the pleasure to train Simba I think he taught me just as much as I taught him if not more. CARemaining neutral to all dogs and people is a necessity if you’re planning on taking your dog into pet friendly stores.
If your dog isn’t ready for public access I’d highly recommend:
•people watching from a distance
-> helps keep their threshold low and “people exist, but they’re irrelevant to me.”
•start in non-busy areas/stores
-> keeping the criteria low offers more engagement and sets foundations for important skills like loose leash manners
•work on your dog’s engagement with you
-> this will make it easier to redirect your dogs focus back on you when a trigger appears.
I’ve started working on Jäger’s neutrality since he was 4 months old. Now that he is 15, almost 16, months old he is almost completely neutral to all dogs and people, has top tier engagement with me, is capable of ignoring loud noises such as crowds, carts moving and bumping, loud machinery, etc etc.
Neutrality doesn’t happen overnight, and starting it early won’t “destroy” your dog’s drive or arousal, but simply redirect and channel it into something better. If my high drive dog is capable of being neutral around the public, so should yours and it is possible!!🙌🏻
