Encounters like this are incredibly rare and deeply significant, especially when we consider that whale shark populations have declined by an estimated 50–60% over the past 75 years. Both whale sharks and reef manta rays face intense anthropogenic pressures. They are directly targeted by fisheries; manta rays for their gill plates used in traditional medicine, and whale sharks for their fins. Beyond this, both species are highly vulnerable to accidental bycatch, as well as the escalating impacts of plastic pollution and habitat degradation. Protecting marine megafauna is essential. These species play critical roles in maintaining healthy ocean ecosystems, and their decline signals wider ecosystem instability. 🪸 Whale shark (Rhincodon typus) — IUCN Red List: Endangered 🪸 Reef manta ray (Mobula alfredi) — IUCN Red List: Vulnerable

𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘁𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗵𝗮𝗱 𝗮 𝘀𝗮𝗱 𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗮 𝗣𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁... 🥺 We came across a manta ray with a large injury to its back end, most likely from a predator such as a shark, although we can’t be 100% sure. It’s never easy to see something like this, but it’s also a reminder that this is the reality of life in the ocean. Even animals as calm and graceful as mantas are part of a much bigger food chain. We’ve shared the footage with the Marine Megafauna Foundation (@marinemegafauna) to try and identify this individual and see if there’s anything that can be done, or at the very least, if there’s anything we can learn from it. This was one of the most beautiful underwater encounters I've ever had, and I probably won't get over it. During my travels, I was lucky enough to see this aggregation of Mantas in the Maldives, and it truly did not feel real. Mantas are pure magic, and no matter how many times you see them, the feeling never fades. If you ever get the chance to dive with them, respect their space: move slowly, don’t touch, and simply let them glide around you. Leave only bubbles. Instead of supporting places that keep animals for profit, choose ethical alternatives. Many true sanctuaries, often small, non-governmental organisations, focus on rescuing and rehabilitating marine life to release them back into the wild. They rely heavily on donations and eco-tourism to keep going, and your support makes a real difference. I also want to acknowledge that not all aquariums are the same. Some play an important role in breeding endangered species, rehabilitating animals, or studying marine life, all of which help protect them in the wild. You can also help mantas and marine wildlife everywhere by reducing, reusing, and recycling plastic to keep our oceans clean, and by avoiding commercially processed seafood. Bycatch from large-scale fisheries is one of the biggest threats to marine life, causing massive population declines worldwide. The best way will always be to see these gentle giants in the wild, free, where they belong. Let’s care more so future generations can feel the same magic.
