A wish someone had told me this before I ran a marathon!!! When I ran Barcelona marathon my garmin started celebrating once I’d ran 26.2 miles, I saw what I thought was the finish line and I started to run as fast as I could thinking the marathon was going to be over in seconds! I was wrong! This was not the finish line I still had what felt like a long way to go, I had used up that last bit of energy sprinting to the finish that wasn’t the finish. So I levelled up my pace took a deep breath and kept going. I ran through the finish line and my garmin told me I’d ran 26.49 miles. I found out that this is completely normal, when we are running through crowds, dodging others, taking turns we end running over the 26.2 miles as when I ran London marathon 6 weeks later my watch said I ran 26.41. I just wish i knew that before hand so im sharing it with you so you do. MY TOP TIP: 💙 Most races will have a painted blue line along the course - this line is the most direct, fastest way to the finish line. 🏁 follow the blue line until you see that finish line - you will know when you get to the finish as the music is loud crowds are the crazy here. She also knows how important it is to elevate the heart rate, get good blood flow to inflamed tissue, and expedite the recovery process before the next hard workout in a couple of days. Evan generally follows up with 1 easy day after moderate intensity/volume workouts and 2 easy days after high intensity/volume workouts. I’m the boss. 😂 Backstory time marathon week was NOT playing nice: Monday – heavy colds said hi 🤧 Tuesday – my period said “surprise” 🥲 Wednesday – feverish, dysmenorrhea, clogged nose… triple threat. Thursday – almost skipped the send-off party because I felt so weak. But seeing Coach Jaymie and my co-ambassadors? Instant fuel. 🥹 Friday – hotel check-in, rest, carb load mode 🍝 Saturday – full rest. Protect the energy. Not every strong week looks strong. Sometimes it looks like tissues, cramps, and showing up anyway. I’ve seen a few runners lately who struggle to do a proper easy run. They’re racing a 5km in 25 minutes but then doing easy runs at 5:30 pace for example. After 16 years of consistent running and racing, I can say slowing my pace for easy runs has been a true game changer. In 2012 I tried really hard to break 1:45 for the half marathon. I was doing most of my “easy runs” at a 5:15 pace or faster. I didn’t hit my goal that year. Fast forward 14 years and I just ran a 1:33 half last fall, and my easy run pace was around 5:45-6:00 most of the time (9:16-9:40). Running easy allows you to get your mileage higher without feeling beat up and overtrained. Running easy allows you to nail your speed sessions. I know for many runners it doesn’t make sense to slow down to get faster, but trust me it works! #injuryprevention #marathoner #physiotherapist

The 5-Hour Athlete (The Endurance Game) For this runner, the game is time on feet + fueling The long run is the center of your plan, making it progressively longer to build durability and train your gut to intake 40g to 60g of carbs (2-3 energy gels) + around 500mL of fluids an hour. ​ ​2. The 3-Hour Athlete (The Threshold Game) For this runner, 10k and Half Marathon fitness plays a huge role. ​ An optimal plan pulls workouts from the 10k/HM playbook (intervals, tempos). Plus, marathon pace is significantly faster than easy pace, which means you need long intervals at race pace to build up the legs for running fast on tired legs. ​ Don't follow a cookie cutter plan based on distance.
