💖💙 Happy 65th Anniversary to Walt Disney Studios’ beloved classic! ♥️ Did you know there’s a true love story behind the character design of Aurora? ✨ 💕 Marc Davis was tasked with designing the elegant and beautiful Princess Aurora and when it came time to animate, they filmed live actors for reference. Marc Davis hired a fashion design student named Alice Estes from Chouinard Art Institute (where he was an animation instructor) to create the flowy skirt he had designed. 💕 Marc and Alice fell in love and were married. Alice went on from that first Disney assignment to design the international costumes for the dolls in it’s a small world as well as the pirates in Pirates of the Caribbean, plus so much more. 💕 Marc and Alice have windows on Main Street next to each other, honoring their many contributions to the Happiest Place of Earth. Mine Train Through Nature’s Wonderland walked so that Big Thunder Mountain Railroad could run. Or roll, rather. Walt Disney’s love of American railroads led to the Disneyland opening of the Rainbow Caverns Mine Train in 1956, featuring classic desert scenes including anthropomorphic cacti and the famous Balancing Rocks. Disney animation legend Marc Davis would eventually redesign the attraction using inspiration from the Disney documentary series True-Life Adventures. Thank you Imagineering for finally fixing that Marc Davis scene in Disneyland 👏👏👏 It has been working correctiy in the WDW version for a while, but the trumpet was aimed at the floor for a good long time in the Disneyland version until recently 😂 Marc even admitted this scene never worked quite as well as he’d hoped (he was similarly disappointed with the meager flames coming out of the jug of rum near the end of Pirates 🔥). The Ghostess or Ghost Hostess was never called “little Leota” in Disneyland as some like to nickname her. She sometimes was called“female figure with blowing clothes” or Small Girl, but the only time she was “officially” called Little Leota was in WDW’s blueprints and intrusion alert board. Phantom Manor also calls her Petite Leota, but Disneyland never had that label for her anywhere. The Ghost Hostess does look more like a bride now than when she first appeared. Her original role was to look similar to a female mortuary attendant from the movie the Love One, which is why she is talking about death certificates instead of bridal things 😂 Rolly Crump designed the hand sconces (no surprise there). Also note: There were many more changing portraits that never got used, including one featuring rotting fruit and one with withering flowers. You see six slides for the dust bowl concept here because most of these changing portraits had six different slides when they were first created so they could fade one into the other rather than using the lightning effect (like April-December in the queue). “It’s just because she’s a woman that she gets away with it” is what the men in the office said as they accused Mary Blair of exploiting her gender to take advantage of Walt. They were extremely jealous of her talent and didn’t like being made to animate in the style of her designs. That rejection letter isn’t the same exact one Marc received, but it is a similar one sent to women in that same time period. His artistically talented wife Alice Davis wanted to be an animator but women weren’t allowed in the animation program in the Chouinard Art Institute at the time, so she went into costuming instead. Marc Davis sketched many strong female characters in much of his concept art, though not all of them got all the way to production. Marc Davis supervised every part of the bibbidi bobbidi boo sequence (also known as The Magic Song.
