If you look up the history, since 1960 only 2778 stars have been issued and on this day one more was added to that very very special list! FEThe murals on Salt Lake City’s Fleet Block, located at 300 West and 800 South, featured portraits of individuals who were murdered by law enforcement. 🎞️ by @sltrib, @franciscokjolseth, @netmoser
In total, 26 faces were memorialized in these artworks including George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, whose deaths sparked national protests in 2020. The murals also honored Utah residents such as Bernardo Palacios-Carbajal, Zane James, Cindreia Europe, Bobby Ray Duckworth, Dillon Taylor, and Jovany Mercado-Bedolla. These portraits served as a powerful memorial and gathering place for the community to honor and remember those lost.
However, as of March 2025, the buildings housing these murals have been demolished to make way for redevelopment. The city plans to incorporate a dedicated memorial and commissioned artwork in the new development to honor the history and social justice themes represented by the original murals.
“We hoped that the mural would be the change,” said Mercado, whose 26-year-old brother, Jovany Mercado-Bedolla, was shot and killed by police in August 2019. “To see them come down, [we’re] feeling defeated. Now we’re just hoping the city stays true to their word.”
