COBuring Methane from the lake.
In one of nature’s most surreal displays of “frozen fire,” methane gas bubbles trapped beneath the ice of Arctic lakes are being lit on fire by researchers and enthusiasts. This isn’t just a cool party trick; it’s a visible warning of the “methane feedback loop”. As permafrost—the permanently frozen ground of the Arctic—begins to thaw, it acts like a giant freezer being unplugged. Ancient organic material like plants and animals, frozen for thousands of years, is now rotting and being digested by microbes. In the oxygen-poor (anaerobic) conditions at the bottom of these newly formed thermokarst lakes, these microbes release massive amounts of methane gas that bubble to the surface and become trapped by the winter ice.
The scale of this “methane mystery” is staggering. Methane is over 25 to 80 times more potent than carbon dioxide at trapping heat in our atmosphere, and scientists estimate that there is more carbon locked in the permafrost than is currently in the entire global atmosphere. When this gas is released, it accelerates global warming, which in turn melts more permafrost—creating a cycle that could lead to an additional 0.5°C of warming by the end of the century. While seeing a lake “erupt” in flames is visually stunning, it represents a massive geological “burp” that could change our climate forever.
