An immerse and stunning graphic novel featuring an epic quest of two unlikely friends across a magical world👇🏽 📚Lightfall books 1-3: The Girl and the Galdurian, Shadow of the Bird & The Dark Times by Tim Probert @timprobert The first Lightfall book introduces us to Bea, who gets easily overwhelmed and feels safe living in with her gramps in a remote forest. One day a mysterious figure called Cad appears in the forest claiming to be the last of a lost race called the Galdurians. That same day her gramps disappears and Bea must overcome her fears to try and find him. As the books develop you uncover more about the history and mythology of the wonderful world or Irpa. Bea and Cad form an unlikely but powerful friendship and of course the fate of the world will sit in their hands. 🤎These are incredible graphic novels with exceptional storytelling. There are times when the narrative is conveyed purely by the illustrations, and other times it leans more into text. The world building is beautifully conveyed. Irpa is a magical world with a complex history and the different landscapes, people and mysteries are wonderfully drawn. There is just enough resolution in each book to keep you satisfied but an enticing bigger overall plot that makes it impossible not to want to continue the journey. These stories are about courage, resilience, perseverance as well as friendship, sacrifice and making mistakes. There are spirits, dragons, wizards, menacing ooze, battles and sanctuaries. If you are looking for surefire hits, these are the middle grade titles (excluding graphic novels, which we’ll get to later this week!) that were the most popular, both in sales AND kid feedback, at my store over the past year. Which ones haven’t you or yours read yet? Time to get cracking! THE WILD ROBOT, by Peter Brown (ages 8-12)—even before the movie, this was a big seller for us CITY SPIES, by James Ponti (ages 8-12)—remains such an accessible series with perfect pacing and an ensemble cast, although I fully expect his newest, THE SHERLOCK SOCIETY, to end up on this list next year, as it is already flying out the door MEDUSA, by Katherine Marsh (ages 8-12)—kids literally clamoring for next year’s sequel to this series about kids descended from Greek monsters MAX IN THE HOUSE OF SPIES (ages 9-13)—ditto about the sequel because we can’t handle that cliffhanger THE LIARS SOCIETY (ages 10-14)—and ANOTHER sequel we’re all breathless for DOGTOWN (ages 8-12)—Katherine Applegate & Gennifer Choldenko’s novel is our store’s #1 seller in the past year! Why? Because super short chapters, lots of white space, spot illustrations, and humor and heart NATIONAL ARCHIVE HUNTERS (ages 8-12)—we’re DC adjacent so obvs we love an art heist set in DC, but this mystery has appeal well beyond geography PERCY JACKSON & THE LIGHTNING THIEF (ages 8-13)—the series that keeps on giving THE ENIGMA GIRLS (ages 10+)—so happy that a nonfiction title made this list and so delighted by how much even my nonfiction skeptics have loved this 2024 release (fully expect it to win all the awards come Jan) WHAT HAPPENED TO RACHEL RILEY? I chose ones that dive into self-discovery, standing up for what’s right, and the chaos of growing up. I wanted books that weren’t just great reads but unforgettable ones. Starfish by Lisa Fipps @authorlisafipps was an easy pick for its raw, honest portrayal of self-acceptance and body image. Ellie’s journey through bullying and learning to take up space is powerful and deeply moving. A Kind of Spark by Elle McNicoll @ellemcnicollofficial spoke to me because Addie’s fight for her voice to be heard is both inspiring and necessary. It’s a story about embracing differences and making change. Meanwhile, The Last Bear by Hannah Gold @hannahgold_author is more than just an adventure—it’s a call to action. April’s connection with the polar bear makes you care about the planet in a way that sticks.
