I think I found a shiny Pokemon 👀 and a pretty rare one! ✨ Not long after I started microscopy, I saw this disco dancer tardigrade that @my.microscopic.world posted and I went CRAZY! I passed months trying to find this particular species because they look like gems under polarized light! Not only their muscle strands glow but their exoskeleton and their stomach know how to put an ambiance to a party 🕺🏻 You probably have seen the mama bear I posted two weeks ago which was huge, but since she was pregnant and pretty thick, the light couldn’t pass through her like it does with this one 🥰 Milnesium tardigrades, which is the name of this water bear genus, are cosmopolitan and carnivorous and they love to feed on nematodes and rotifers! Adult Milnesium can even swallow rotifers whole 😳 I’ll need to see it from my myself to believe it though 😂 These water bears are characterized by the presence of six peribuccal papillae which make their mouths look like little crowns 👑 and two lateral papillae. Their claws are also waaay longer than those I usually post about. These claws are also separated into independent primary and secondary branches. Milnesium can live up to 2 months and lay around 40 eggs during that time. If you’re thirsty they’re thirsty! Water your stentors. This little friend was super smooshed under the coverslip causing it to spread out and lose volume. Once I added water it lifted the coverslip slightly and let our friend get back to a more natural shape. More smoosh = better detail but a less natural view. When water evaporates, salt crystals are formed! Not only do we shed tears when experiencing emotions, but tears are also released every time we blink. While emotional tears indicate distress between individuals from certain animal species, they serve additional functions beyond emotional expression! Tears consist mainly of water, providing hydration to the eye, aiding in clear vision by focusing light, and facilitating the dispersion of electrolytes, proteins, lipids, and mucins. Electrolytes, such as sodium, chloride, calcium, and potassium are important for maintaining pH stability and normal osmotic pressure (they also create beautiful crystalline patterns on the microscope slide when water evaporates). Lots of different proteins are present: some are antimicrobial, some are enzymes that help breakdown lipids and other proteins and some are involved in wound healing and inflammation regulation. Lipids can also be found in tears! Can you see some small oily droplets floating around? These microtubules are on the move! This pattern of black and white is a preparation of fluorescently labeled microtubules set into motion by kinesin motor proteins (white). Microtubules are protein fibers that facilitate the transport of cellular components throughout a cell’s interior. Within a cell, microtubules span from the nucleus to the cell membrane, and the motor protein kinesin “walks” along them, carrying cargo from one area of the cell to another. However, this system can be tailored in vitro (in a lab) to generate completely different motion. As seen in this video, instead of the kinesin protein “walking” along the microtubules, the “motors” are pushing the microtubules around. This glimpse of nature at its finest is one of many hidden wonders uncovered through basic science and brought to you by HHMI’s Beautiful Biology. Then it tried its luck with a Stentor and appeared to be entirely disgusted as it spat it right back out (clip 3).
