🚁 This drone swarm just built a flying structure in mid-air. Vijay Kumar’s lab at UPenn created ModQuad - the first modular aerial platform that self-assembles while flying. Watch six individual drones connect into larger and larger formations. Each module is a 27-gram Crazyflie quadrotor inside a 7-gram carbon fiber cage. Neodymium magnets at the corners let them snap together edge-to-edge. The strength-to-weight ratio is 25:1. That’s why these tiny drones can lift objects and maintain stable flight even when connected. Here’s the clever part: decentralized control. Each drone manages its own attitude, so the system doesn’t need recalibration when modules join or separate. The formation just works. The demo shows pairs docking, then four modules, then all six together. When you push the structure, it stabilizes itself instantly.
