A pivotal moment when a band built on improvisational psychedelia hinted at the sleek, synth-driven pop of the future.
Released in 1976 on my favorite Can album, Flow Motion, this era also marked Can bassist Holger Czukay’s (tape splicing and sampling pioneer) stepping away from the bass to focus on synth and sound experimentation.
Gear used ~ Alpha 77: A custom-built guitar synthesizer and string machine from Zurich, which provided the distinct “synthesized strings” and electronic washes heard on the track.
Farfisa Keyboards: Keyboardist Irmin Schmidt played Farfisa organs and electronic pianos, which were a staple of the band’s studio at the time.
Shortwave Radio: Bassist Holger Czukay began using shortwave radios as “unpredictable synthesizers” during this era, layering found-sound frequencies into the mix.
