They say you are what you eat, but that surely isn’t the case with our Species Spotlight Sunday star, the crabeater seal. Instead of the animals you might expect this seal to feast on, this curious Antarctic critter relies on one of the region’s most important species– krill! The name “crabeater” originates from the German language, where the word “krebs” refers to other crustaceans, like krill, in addition to the expected sand scurriers the name suggests. The crabeater seal’s teeth reflect their dietary preference with intricate compositions, evolutionarily designed to fit together and filter their krill prey from the ocean water and keep them from escaping. To search for their favorite meal, the seals take to the ocean and usually venture to depths shallower than 165 ft (50 m) but can reach up to 1,970 ft (600 m) deep! For the most part, they feed at night but sometimes also at dusk and dawn. When they venture from their nightly routine, they have been observed diving deeper than their normal range– suggesting that their feeding depths follow the krill’s daily vertical migrations. Despite krill taking up around 90% of the seal’s diet, they might occasionally seek out fish or squid for a supplementary snack, as well. Krill not only support the estimated 4 million crabeater seal individuals, but they play an essential role in the Antarctic food web as a whole. Krill acts as a food source for almost every species in the region. This week at the 42nd Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) meeting, we hope to see efforts made to protect krill, to safeguard their populations, and the multitude of other species that rely on them, like the crabeater seal! Did you know that basking sharks (Cetorhinus maximus) are the largest fish found in Canadian waters? These gentle giants are filter feeders, exclusively eating plankton. They can reach lengths of up to 12 metres; however, their average adult length is 6.7-8.8 metres, roughly the size of a bull killer whale. Basking sharks were once so common in B.C.’s waters that they were deemed a nuisance for fishers and boaters. An eradication program by the federal government running from 1955 to 1969 dispatched sharks with large blades mounted on the bow of government fisheries patrol vessels. Prior to the blade method, basking sharks were shot and harpooned by patrol vessels while others opportunistically rammed into them. Among the public, basking shark harpooning became a relatively popular sport. In total, thousands of basking sharks were eradicated from B.C. waters to make way for commercial fishers, like gillnetters. 

Today, basking sharks are listed as an Endangered species in B.C. and it has been estimated that it will take approximately 200 years for the population numbers of basking sharks to recover to their previous abundance. Unfortunately, this estimate is based on the assumption of zero human-induced mortality and we know that it is not the case. For instance, in 2022 non-total allowable catch (i.e. bycatch) data for the groundfish trawl fishery obtained by Pacific Wild indicate that basking shark(s) were caught as bycatch along with at least seven other shark species by the fishery. The good news is that basking shark sightings have remained steady in B.C. over the past decade with two to three sightings in B.C. each year. If you spot a basking shark in B.C. please report it to scientists by calling 1-877-50-SHARK (1-877-507-4275) or e-mail sharks@dfo-mpo.gc.ca. Shark sanctuaries are an important piece in conserving these magnificent creatures! As ecotourism and sanctuaries are created, trends show an increase in protection for sharks (reports project ecotourism to generate far more $ for local economies in the next 20 years— surpassing the global value of the shark fin trade with a more long term sustainable “use” of “marine resources.”) What that means is governments are more likely to protect sharks and help keep them alive because they are worth more alive. I hope you are inspired to support MPA’s and ecotourism. If they are enforced correctly, I’ve seen them make a huge difference, not just for sharks, but for the subsequently reliant ecosystem.
