MAHardest exam of my life dude. I did it though! I freaking passed!
I studied for what seemed like forever for that exam. We were given 4 hours to complete 200 multiple choice questions. I finished with about 12 minutes remaining.
Also I should mention, I took this exam less than 48 hours after receiving devastating news. It was too late for me to reschedule and not pay $300+ AGAIN so I took the test anyways. I was in a haze and I fully did not believe I passed it.
I text my mom right after and told her I failed. But I didn’t. And this serves as a reminder that just because we are having negative thoughts doesn’t mean they will come true. 🤍

HEPassing the National Counseling Exam (or other equivalents) is a HUGE accomplishment. But if your exam experience was anything like mine, I studied for weeks, passed, and then couldn’t tell you a single thing that I learned 😂 The exam covers EVERYTHING related to counseling and therapy. And I have applied the information I studied maybe a handful of times in my years of practice. So if you asked me what I studied for the exam, my exact answer would be blah blah blah, blah blah blah blah blah blah 😂

Being a good therapist is one set of skills, and testing well is basically a totally different skill set! In the testing center, it's all about recall- the more associations we create for information, the more hooks we can cast to retrieve that information later.
This is called context-dependent memory. Studies show that when we associate new learning with sensory cues, we’re more likely to recall that information when we reintroduce those same cues later. (Smith & Vela, 2001; Herz, 2004). An underutilized tool in prepping for a big exam like the #NCE or #CPCE is using smells and color coding to intentionally train our brains to recall test answers.
Try this:
💜 Curate a color for each category of info you're studying for the counseling exam
❤️ Use color coded pens or highlighters.
💙 Use scents- like essential oils, candles, or scented markers during your study session.
On exam day, imagining that color or recalling that scent can cue your brain to retrieve what you studied.

ALHOW I CREATED MY NATIONAL CERTIFICATION EXAMINATION (NCE) PREPARATION PLAN!

🔥 step 1: choose your study tools. I chose apex for modules + smartbank and used a google doc to map it all out. I also considered what I’d use for both SEE and NCE prep.
⭐️ step 2: make a custom visual table (I used google docs). I made a visual tracker with color coding, module breakdowns, and yes — checkboxes. because if you don’t love checking things off… why are you even here?
🎉 step 3: plan it around your life and plan it all at once! weddings, birthdays, vacations, clinical, sim lab — it all goes in. this helps you see when to push hard and when to ease up.
step 4: focus on what matters. I used an apex mock exam to find my top five weakest areas and gave extra time to those. I also factored in which modules were the longest, so nothing caught me off guard.
👑 step 5: set clear goals (do 50 Qs versus study for 60 minutes). none of that vague “study for an hour” energy (I would procrastinate to make the time go quicker). I made concrete goals like “complete 50 questions” or “finish one module section” — things that hold me accountable.
🌈 step 6: be flexible (but don’t wing it)! planning ahead = fewer surprises. but also? life happens. be flexible. readjust without guilt.
🤓 BONUS: ask chatGPT for feedback. I had ChatGPT review my entire plan before locking it in. It helped me spot gaps and make it better.

DEFinding out I passed the NCE (national counselor exam) after 6 years and 11 weeks of studying, was truly the biggest relief and I was filled with so much joy.
