OPprimary care clinic 👩🏻⚕️✨👁️
For my last rotation in the Waterloo clinic, I’ve been in primary care (PC)! In PC, we see a variety of eye conditions - from common issues like dry eye, cataracts, and refractive errors to detecting more complex cases such as glaucoma suspects, ocular diseases, and binocular vision issues!
In the exam room, we mainly use the slit lamp for a detailed look at the eye’s structures, the tonometer for measuring eye pressure, and the phoropter for an accurate prescription.
After rotating through all the specialty clinics, I’ve been feeling more confident and prepared to tackle different cases in PC. When we detect something that needs further attention, we can also refer patients to our specialty clinics - this includes the ocular health, binocular vision, and contact lens clinics for more targeted care!!

EYPOV: what your doctor sees when they look at your cornea 👁️
When we say we’re “checking the front of the eye,” we’re actually scanning multiple layers in seconds — epithelium, Bowman’s layer, stroma, Descemet’s membrane, endothelium. We are looking for subtle changes that explain symptoms patients can’t always describe.
It’s one of those moments in clinic where training really clicks… and you realize how much information lives in a few millimeters of tissue.
If you’re in optometry school, save this for the next time you’re at the slit lamp and remind yourself what you’re really looking at.

MO10 question answering strategies for part 1 NBEO:
1. You’re not gonna know every question. You can safely miss like 80ish questions and pass
2. The questions are meant to get answered quickly. So you can leave those 15 minute long optics questions out of your brain
3. The questions aren’t meant to trick you (unlike school). It’s never the rare disease that’s the answer. It’s straight forward
4. All the content was in the KMK books. If you memorized those 2 books, you can expect to know the answer. *Study tip- Don’t skip the smaller sections*
5. You can reason through a lot you don’t know. The eye is painful? Do artificial tears treat pain? Probably not for boards, so pick the steroid.
6. Go rogue. I had a wavelength question I had no clue about so I divided the only 2 numbers in the problem by each other and got an answer. Better than nothing right.
7. Occam’s Razor: it’s the theory that the simplest answer is usually the correct one. It applies to your exam. The 20 year old healthy patient probably doesn’t have Herpes Zoster, the 70 year old doesn’t have a contact lens ulcer.
8. If you don’t know it, flag it and come back. You might know it once your nerves calmed down. If you really don’t know it, move on. What’s worse than missing a question? Missing a question + wasting time.
9. Don’t go back and check every question. If you knew it, be confident and move on. I finished each section an hour early by doing this
10. Focus on endings to medications to find something to treat the case. You’re more likely to have 4 different drug types (eg. A steroid, an antibiotic, an antiviral) as options opposed to 4 of the same (eg. 4 different antibiotics). So what does the eye need? You have a bacterial infection- find something with mycin or oxacin in the name. You likely won’t have to pick the best antibiotic, but will more so have to identify which is an antibiotic. Ya know?
