ROPacifiers have gotten a bit of a bad reputation over the years especially in the beginning and when the mom is breastfeeding.
Im Jen, a night shift mother/ baby nurse, and here is what I tell my patients when they ask, "is it okay if we use a pacifier?"
"I love pacifiers! They are a great tool! When used the right way they can be very useful for soothing, comfort sucking, sleeping and sanity!"
And then I add~
"I know there is conflicting information and if you're breastfeeding you may want to wait a couple of weeks to ensure that breastfeeding is fully established, but truth be known, almost every nurse who works here & has a baby, puts a pacifier in their mouth before they go home. If it's something you want to do, I'll be happy to bring you one!"
A few pros!
They are known to reduce the risk of SIDS.
They can soothe a fussy baby who has nursed for 45 minutes and wants to continue when mom is falling asleep.
They are helpful when you need 10 more minutes in Target or in the car on the ride home. Or when you need a family member or friend to console the baby while you are not available.
They are easier to take away (when the time comes) than thumbs or fingers.
They are also helpful for pain relief, given to a baby during an injection, heel stick or circumcision.
They can also extend breastfeeding by giving the parents another option before going to formula when they are feeling overwhelmed when their baby is not interested in latching anymore but is still acting hungry.
Be sure that you do not use a pacifier in place of a feeding. If a baby is hungry and sucking on a pacifier, that is the time to try latching or give a bottle.
Use a pacifier as a tool, with intention. You may need to try a few different kinds to see which one your baby prefers most.
