Why I fuss about the edges of the packaging if I’m a food stylist? I always put my nose into all departments - props, special effects, lighting, production. I’m a curious person. I saw how to fix untidy sides long time ago, in the times when there was a special trained person on set that took care of pack shots. For some reason it was always a serious guy with a beard sitting quietly in the corner in white gloves. He carefully cut freshly printed packaging mockups, glued it together and guarded them with his life. He would appear with his creation at the last moment before the first AD would shoot “stand by”, put it on the table for the pack shot and disappear till the next shoot. Now days set dresser takes care of packaging in film productions. And in photo - sometimes I do it, sometimes the photographer. You direct packshots like lifestyle. And lifestyle shots like luxury That’s why the image feels wrong even when it looks polished. The fix - a 3 step process Step 1: Lock the shot type. Step 2: Prove one thing. Only one. If it’s a packshot, prove readability. If it’s lifestyle, prove use. If it’s luxury, prove texture. The moment you chase all three, it looks artificial. Step 3: Protect continuity. Stop letting the image “improve itself.” That’s where trust breaks.

There’s a lottery element to this with no processes explained - ‘If your content shines, you could be directly selected for our BOJ PR list, unlocking more exclusive gifts, early product launches, and premium collaboration opportunities!’ The word ‘if’ is carrying a lot of weight here - ‘if your content shines’ - define shine please. ‘you could be directly selected’ - but most likely you won’t and the agency will still have all your ideas and all your creativity to create their own content - and you just gave it to them for free. ‘If you want to become the face of BOJ, fill out the Google form below..’ I took a look at the form: You must send the first draft to us before uploading. If revisions are needed, we may ask you to adjust it according to the provided content guidelines. This is a non-paid collaboration. We’ll send you the package within 1 weeks, so feel free to try them out ! Further into the form, there are do’s and don’ts - excuse me! You can express your thoughts in any way that you want to and you don’t have to follow the self made rules (such as no dim lighting, no use of the word coverage, no pack shots etc). Accepting PR or gifting doesn’t mean you can’t be honest. No wonder they want to look through everything before they ‘approve’ it. This is a super controlling approach in an attempt to get only positive coverage and it’s not a contract. You will be able to buy this product in a few weeks for about £15 and you can say exactly what you please - in a time vs money exercise, I’ll spend the £15 and consider it a bloody bargain not to have to hoop jump. If you’re new to influencing, please know you don’t have to do this - any of it.

Pack shots are a fundamental part of your work as commercial cinematographer. They can become very time consuming cause every detail needs to be perfect, so at least being able to come up with a good plan for the lighting really simplifies the process. We didn’t really have a lot of time for this pack shot cause we knew that it would’ve lasted just a few frames in the final edit, nonetheless we did our best to create something cool and meaningful. Playing with composition was crucial to make the frame look interesting, then we started with a @nanlite_global Forza 500 through a 8x silk to create a general ambient lighting. A @nanlite_global Pavotube 30x was backlighting the shoes and the metal legs of that small table the agency gave as as a prop, while another one was bouncing off of a white flag to create a sort of key light on the shoes Final but most importantly touch was the sun slash on the floor which gently kisses the shoes and helps to make the image feel more natural, created with a @nanlite_global Forza 60 with the projection mount .
