A little background:
On this day, January 30, 1961, Patsy Cline released “I Fall to Pieces,” a single that became one of her signature songs and a cornerstone of country music, even though she was initially reluctant to record it. Seven years into her career with over a dozen singles already out, this track—co-written by Harlan Howard and Hank Cochran—marked a creative shift with its polished Nashville sound, string section, and backing vocals from the Jordanaires (Elvis Presley’s group).
Cline worried their deep baritones would overpower her rich contralto and that the orchestral style clashed with her usual yodeling and western swing roots, but those very elements helped create the magic.
Recorded in November 1960, the song captured raw heartbreak from a woman’s perspective in an unrequited love story, aligning with Howard’s belief that the best country tunes explore shaky or tragic relationships. Despite her reservations, Cline delivered a tender, commanding performance—described as caressing the lyrics “like satin”—that left everyone in the studio in tears by the fourth take. Her clearer, fuller singing to cut through the mix made her voice stand out powerfully, turning what she disliked into strengths.
The single started slowly, ignored at first by radio, but climbed steadily over eight months to No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart and crossed over big, ending the year as No. 2 on the Hot 100. Two months after hitting the top, Cline survived a serious car accident, which limited promotion, but her Grand Ole Opry appearances kept it alive. Its gut-wrenching emotion has inspired covers by artists like Loretta Lynn, Linda Ronstadt (with soaring range), Trisha Yearwood (mezzo-soprano power), and Aaron Neville (falsetto soul twist), though Cline’s original remains the definitive version of country heartbreak.

OFIt's never too late to have a new dream and never too late for it to come true.
When I was 19, I started signing with the legendary Ronnie Hawkins. I learned a lot from the "Hawkins College of Rock and Roll Knowledge", including how important Patsy Cline was. A singer' s singer, he said. Cline had died in '63; her records were hard to find. But Ronnie had some 45's she'd made for Decca including "A Poor Man's Roses" and its flip side "Walkin' After Midnight". I was in awe of that VOICE, the way she made every song so personal you thought she wrote it herself. To me, she was beyond category. That's when it started. The dream of doing something special as an artist, like she had done.
Well My life is wild. Only 8 years later, I did my own singing playing Patsy Cline in the much lauded bio pic of Loretta Lynn, "Coal Miner’s Daughter". The film was huge. 7 Academy Award and Golden Globe noms (Sissy won the Oscar!), soundtrack charted all over the world, #1 on US country charts, CMA noms, endless accolades to this day. Being a part of that changed my life forever.
So- months ago, when they asked me to join the Grand Ol Opry tribute to Patsy Cline, my answer was "YES !!!!!!"
Then reality set in.
I was 27 when I stood on the Ryman stage as Patsy Cline. And now, the numbers are flipped - I'm 72.
I hadn't sung in public for 25 years.
So I had a new dream: to sing again.
I went full obsessive on this. First up, by -by cigs, forever. Devoted each day to technique and practice, working those muscles. Visualized myself onstage in an outfit that I then had my niece @courtdangelo make, down to the embroidered appliques and flowers on the inside brim of a flamenco hat.
I made the three minutes I'd have on stage the biggest deal in the world.
Because to me it was.
