No Nonsense Tips 03 Cutting low end from your snare… and the peak level goes UP? Yeah… that shouldn’t happen. But it does. All the time. Most producers will just ignore it and carry on. But what you’re actually seeing is: – Your fundamental being exposed – Or phase shifting messing with your transient Either way… your snare isn’t behaving how you think it is. There’s a simple way to stabilise it. I’ve shown it here, but there’s more to it. If you want me to break this down properly for your mixes: DM me “MIX” or comment “MIX” #mixingtips #musicproduction #eqtips #homestudiolife #producerlife

No Nonsense Tips 04 Collapsing your bass to mono the wrong way can actually make it worse. Most producers will just throw on a utility and sum everything to mono… But if there’s any phase difference between the left and right, you’re literally combining the problem, not fixing it. That’s where things start to lose weight, punch, and consistency. Sometimes the better move? Just take the left. Or the right. And choose the one that actually sounds solid. Simple. But most people overlook it. If you’re not checking things like this, your mixes won’t translate properly. DM me “MIX” or comment “MIX” if you want me to show you how to tighten this up in your own tracks. #mixingtips #musicproduction #producerlife #lowend #homestudio

I wish someone had told me this before I wasted years overcomplicating my mixes. One of the biggest mistakes beginner engineers make is stacking too many plugins on every track. More processing doesn't mean better sound — it usually means a smaller, more cluttered mix. The engineers getting the best results are often using just a few carefully chosen tools and letting the music breathe. Lesson #8 Simple mixes almost always sound bigger and clearer. This “rule” is ruining more mixes than it’s helping. High-passing everything except the kick and bass sounds logical… until your mix starts feeling thin, brittle, and lifeless. Because low-end isn’t just for bass instruments. There’s valuable weight and support in: pianos guitars synths room mics pads When you remove that blindly, you’re not cleaning your mix… you’re stripping out the foundation. Filters aren’t a default move. They’re a solution to a real problem. If there’s no problem, don’t cut. 🎛️ Stop Mixing So Bright. Leave Some Headroom for Mastering. One of the biggest mistakes I see? Mixes that are already hyped in the top end before they even reach mastering. Over-boosted highs might sound “exciting” at first… But too much 8kHz–16kHz buildup leads to: ❌ Harsh vocals ❌ Fatiguing cymbals ❌ Brittle guitars ❌ No room left to enhance clarity later Mastering is where subtle overall tonal shaping happens. If your mix is already overly bright, the mastering engineer has no room to add air or polish but only to tame damage. 🎯 What you should do instead: Aim for balance, not hype Keep the top end smooth, not sharp Focus on clarity through separation, not excessive EQ boosts A well-balanced mix gives mastering space to: ✔ Add controlled brightness ✔ Enhance depth ✔ Improve translation across systems Brightness should feel expensive and open, not piercing and forced. If your mix sounds impressive because it’s bright… it might not survive mastering. This is the one thing that was making my mixes sound muddy and I had no idea. A lot of muddy mixes aren't caused by bad EQ… they're caused by too many instruments fighting for the same space. When multiple parts compete for the same frequencies, no amount of EQ is going to clean it up. Sometimes the best mix decision you can make is removing a part entirely. Lesson #5 Arrangement matters more than EQ. No Nonsense Tips 02 Side information in your low end will ruin your mix translation. It might sound fine in your studio… But take it to a club, car, or headphones and things start falling apart. Phase issues. Weak low end. Inconsistency everywhere. Most producers don’t even realise they’re doing it. I’m not fixing it here… but if you know, you know. If it sounds good, leave it alone. We've all been guilty of throwing on as many plugins as we can just to feel productive, but if you're getting it right at the source, a good volume balance does 95% of the work for you. Don't over-process just because you feel like you have to. #MixingTips #MusicProduction #AudioEngineering #LessIsMore #Mastering #ProAudio

Read here 👇 1. Too many narrow cuts Because of plugins like Pro-Q, it’s extremely tempting to make lots of really precise, narrow cuts. The problem is, those cuts only seem necessary because you have a tool like Pro-Q. When you actually use your ears, more often than not, the problem isn’t even there. And those cuts thin out your sound, making things feel hollow, empty, or dead. Use your ears. You usually won’t need a narrow cut. The only time you do is if you clearly hear a sharp, isolated frequency. ⸻ 2. Not compensating for gain when compressing A basic tenet of audio psychology: louder sounds better. Almost anytime you compress—especially with makeup gain—your signal gets louder. The problem is, the compression itself might not actually be what you want. You think it sounds better just because it’s louder. This is why you often see people stacking compressors. Each one makes things louder, but they’re not actually evaluating what the compressor is doing. So remember: anytime you use a compressor (this applies to EQ and saturation as well), make sure you’re compensating for gain. ⸻ 3. Hating the demo Generally speaking, when an artist gives you a demo, there’s something they fundamentally like about it. If you hate the demo, you’re probably not hearing the record the way the artist heard it. And whatever you do is likely going to miss the mark. If you hate the demo, take a step back and reapproach it. Find a way to like it as it is, then figure out what you can contribute. #mixingengineer #audioengineer #mixingandmastering #musicproduction #audioengineering
