OCThis is Fraser Perring, an activist short seller. Unlike most investors, he’s not looking for companies that will go to the moon. He wants ones that will sink. Once he’s found one that he thinks is a guaranteed failure, he bets against it.
In 2023 he found a new target — Steward Health Care. The company seemed to be booming, with 39 hospitals and 43,000 employees. But Perring thought differently. He published a report accusing Steward of fake transactions, backdated statements, and outright lies, hoping his revelations would make its share price go down.
Shortly after that, a British lawmaker stood up on the floor of parliament to question whether Perring had ties to Russia. Leaked records obtained by OCCRP suggested that the question was planted by Audere International, a private intelligence firm conducting a smear campaign paid for by Steward. That same month, a five-man team of security professionals staked out Perring’s home in rural England to spy on him, producing surveillance reports that were also in the hands of Audere.
