Why I took CoQ10 during both of my preconception journeys 👇 I didn’t take a ton of supplements—but this one stayed consistent. 🧡 From age 30 to 32 (when I got pregnant the first time) 💛 And again, from 34 to 35 (when we conceived again) I took CoQ10 because I knew it could support my egg quality—especially as I got older. Here’s why it mattered to me: 🧬 CoQ10 supports mitochondrial function, which fuels healthy egg development ⏳ Our natural levels decline as we age (Hi low AMH!) 💡 And egg health is about energy, not just quantity But supplements are never the whole picture. What preconception supplements should you be taking? 🥚 💊 400 micrograms per day of folic acid to prevent neural tube defects. Folate, found in foods such as leafy greens, plays an important role in egg quality, maturation, ovulation and implantation. Some people at risk of neural tube defects will need a higher dose to be prescribed by a GP (e.g. BMI over 30, coeliac, diabetes). Folic acid is recommended to be taken 12 weeks prior to conception up until 12 weeks of pregnancy. 💊 10 micrograms per day of vitamin D. Vitamin D helps to regulate calcium and phosphate in the body which is important for pregnancy and the postpartum period and some research suggests that adequate vitamin D levels have been linked to better outcomes for those undergoing assisted reproductive technology. 💡People with PCOS are more likely to be deficient in vitamin D. 💊 Or you can take a preconception supplement that contains both (plus other micronutrients). 💊 There are other targeted supplements to consider for example myo-inositol for people with PCOS and CoQ10 in those with diminished egg reserves or over the age of 35. 💊 Multivitamins tend to contain vitamin A and high levels should be avoided during pregnancy so it’s best to avoid general multivitamins at this stage. 🌱 If you’re vegan or in the case of omega-3’s, if you avoid oily fish, you might want to look at supplementing with omega- 3’s (EPA/DHA), iodine and vitamin B12. #fertility #fertilitynutrition #preconception #preconceptiondiet #fertilitydiet #fertilitysupplements #fertilityadvice #supplements #ttc #ttccommunity #fertilitysupplements

But it’s 2025, and we KNOW that having the MTHFR genetic mutation impacts your body’s ability to take folic acid and turn it into folate. So why not just take the activated form? You should. 2️⃣ Myo-inositol - such a powerhouse supplement for women with #PCOS or anyone struggling with blood sugar regulation. Lastly, antioxidants. You can get antioxidants from your diet (and you should) but there’s also amazing supplements like this one from @eunatural that have antioxidants in there. I’ve had a lot of stress recently so I’m trying to support that and I love Needed’s stress response, but I will be stopping this as soon as I do my transfer. 2️⃣ The next is Needed iron. What is the right preconception multivitamin? Over the counter supplements such as Elevit and Blackmores are becoming increasingly popular. However, there are reasons why I don't prescribe them. Let's have a look at some of those reasons: * The form of iron used in Elevit is Ferrous Fumarate. This is the least tolerable for of iron and may cause digestive upset such as constipation.  * Folic Acid has been used instead of folate. Folic acid is a synthetic form of folate, which requires a number of reactions to be activated in order to function within the body. * Vitamin D is in an extremely low dose of 20IU. The daily recommended amount is at least 1000IU. * Choline has not been used in Elevit. This is an essential nutrient to work with folate in preventing neural tube defects. Enhances the transport of nutrients across the placenta, reduces the risk of preeclampsia, and plays a role in cognitive function.  * Both copper and zinc are important in supporting babys development. However, the ratio of these nutrients in Elevit is incorrect and studies have shown a ratio of copper at 1.0 may be associated with higher levels of inflammation and oxidative stress. And, because of the low zinc content within Elevit, there is a potential risk that over time the copper may cause a depletion in zinc and even copper toxicity.  Alternatively some over the counter brands I like are: * Naturobest * Eagle * Bioceuticals This is just one of the many topics we cover in Nourishing your Bump.
