JU💉🩸What if one simple blood test could reveal a hidden, inherited heart risk that most people don't know about?
💫 Since my own health scare a few years ago, I've become fascinated by the world of preventative medicine. There are some incredible tests and scans out there now to help us identify medical issues and diseases in the very early stages, and some even help us 'predict' diseases we might be susceptible to.
Today I'm talking about a simple blood test for something called - Lipoprotein(a), often shortened to “Lp(a)”. It’s a special kind of lipoprotein — similar to the “bad” LDL cholesterol, but with a twist: it’s inherited ( via the LPA gene) and it’s an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD) – meaning even if your cholesterol is “ok”, if your Lp(a) is elevated you still carry extra risk.
♀️♀️Why this matters for women: Studies show women often have slightly higher Lp(a) levels than men. Because of hormone changes (menopause) and because women historically are under-tested, this hidden risk can be even more important to uncover.
📉 Guidelines in the in the UK and Europe, suggest a threshold of ~125 nmol/L (which roughly equals ~50-70 mg/dL depending on assay) as a level where risk becomes meaningfully higher.
❤️ If you do have elevated levels you can work with your doctor to optimise all other cardiovascular risk factors: keep LDL-cholesterol, non-HDL-cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar and weight under control. Exercise regularly, quit smoking, manage your stress.
Just because we're born with a genetic susceptibility, doesn't mean those genes have to be expressed.
💬 This one-time test gives you information you can't get from standard cholesterol alone. If your result turns out to show elevated levels you’ve gained a gift of foresight.

ALI didn’t include raw milk, infrared saunas, sun gazing, longevity supplements or parasite cleanses on this list.
I only included pillars of good preventative care, safety nets, and healthcare access. This list is in no particular order and I likely missed a few, but I did place maternal mortality at the very top because God that pisses me off.
I honestly could’ve written out another 70. As the country that spends the most money in healthcare without the outcomes to back it up, we have work to do.
MAY we all be more empowered to take care of our health in 2026 but maybe we also have a system that prioritizes public health over profit 🙏🏾🫡
