🇬🇧 Intel Celéron “Prescott” under the microscope. The first Celeron was announced on March 4, 1998. The aim was to offer an entry-level solution to the competition (AMD, Cyrix, etc.). What’s so strange about this chip’s surface? The Celeron chip is glued to a resin support with connectors, and to a metal capsule for cooling. When the capsule was removed, the chip fortunately came with it, uncovering the surface, but the different layers didn’t come off in the same way. The result is a marbled appearance. At first glance, the CPU looks superb, but when viewed at low magnification (16x), the surface is mottled and inconsistent. However, when magnified, different layers become apparent. The first is uninteresting, but the layers underneath are superb. I counted 3 or 4 layers. The processor is given for 90nm, yet I don’t get the impression that there’s any detail below 160nm. This remains one of the CPUs with the finest detail I’ve ever seen. 🇫🇷 Intel Céléron “Prescott” au microscope. Le premier Celeron a été annoncé le 4 mars 1998. L’objectif était de proposer une offre entrée de gamme face à la concurrence (AMD, Cyrix ...) Pourquoi la surface de cette puce est étrange ? Contrairement aux CPU que j’ai l’habitude de vous montrer, la puce du céléron est collée sur un support en résine avec les connecteurs, et sur la capsule métallique pour le refroidissement. En décollant la capsule, la puce est heureusement venue avec, découvrant la surface, mais les différentes couches ne se sont pas détachées de la même manière. Cela donne cet aspect marbré. De prime abord, le CPU semble superbe, mais quand on le regarde à faible grossissement (16x), la surface est marbrée, sans cohérence. Cependant, quand on grossit, l’observation laisse apparaitre différentes couches. La première est inintéressante, mais celles du dessous sont superbes. J’ai compté 3 ou 4 couches. Le processeur est donné pour 90nm, et pourtant je n’ai pas l’impression qu’il y ait des détails en dessous de 160nm.
