PROnly a handful of countries are widely recognized as having never been formally colonized by European powers, though many experienced foreign influence, occupation, or protectorate status. These exceptions stand out due to unique geographic, political, or strategic factors that allowed them to maintain sovereignty during the height of imperial expansion.
Ethiopia is the most prominent example in Africa. Despite Italy’s attempt to colonize it in the late 19th century, Ethiopia decisively defeated Italian forces at the Battle of Adwa in 1896. This victory preserved its independence and became a powerful symbol of African resistance. Although Italy briefly occupied Ethiopia during World War II, it was never fully colonized in the traditional sense.
Thailand, formerly known as Siam, skillfully navigated colonial pressures in Southeast Asia. Surrounded by British and French colonies, Thai monarchs adopted selective modernization and engaged in strategic diplomacy, ceding some territory but maintaining national sovereignty. Thailand’s ability to play colonial powers against each other helped it remain independent.
Japan avoided colonization by rapidly modernizing during the Meiji Restoration in the late 19th century. It transformed into a powerful industrial and military state, eventually becoming a colonial power itself. Japan’s strength and strategic location made it difficult for Western powers to dominate.
Liberia was founded in the 19th century by freed African Americans under the auspices of the American Colonization Society. While it was never colonized by a European power, its political and economic systems were heavily influenced by the United States.
Other countries like Nepal, Bhutan, Iran, Turkey, and Mongolia retained formal sovereignty despite varying degrees of foreign interference. For instance, Iran faced British and Russian influence over its resources and politics, but was never fully colonized. Bhutan and Nepal maintained autonomy through geographic isolation and strategic diplomacy, while Turkey was the heart of the Ottoman Empire and never fell under European colonial rule.
