OKResearch shows that people regret missed opportunities more than the mistakes they actually made. Psychologist Thomas Gilovich from Cornell University has studied regret for decades and concluded that, over time, inaction tends to create stronger and more lasting regret than action
In 2020, a large study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology found that people across different age groups most often regretted missed chances in education, career decisions, and relationships. Participants were more likely to say “I did not try” than “I tried and failed”
There is also an age pattern. Younger adults tend to regret actions. As people get older, regret shifts toward things they did not do. The emotional impact of mistakes often decreases over time, while unrealized decisions remain part of a person’s life story
Economic research supports this pattern as well. Delaying investment, avoiding skill development, or postponing career changes can measurably affect long term income. These outcomes are calculated in longitudinal financial models and show clear differences over time
One consistent conclusion appears across disciplines. Not making a decision is still a decision. And statistically, inaction is more likely to become a lasting source of regret

But a small clinical study raised an unexpected question:
Are beards actually less hygienic than dog fur?
In 2019, researchers led by radiologist Andreas Gutzeit at the Hirslanden Clinic in Switzerland conducted a study published in European Radiology.
The team collected bacterial samples from 18 bearded men and 30 dogs of various breeds.
Swabs were taken from the skin beneath the men’s beards and from the dogs’ neck fur.
The results surprised the researchers.
All 18 men showed high levels of bacterial contamination in their beard samples.
Among the dogs, 23 out of 30 also had bacteria present, which is normal for skin and fur.
But the key detail was this:
In 7 of the bearded men, scientists detected bacteria considered potentially harmful to human health, including pathogens associated with infections.
None of the dogs in the study carried those same types of harmful bacteria in their fur samples.
In simple terms, some human beards showed higher-risk bacterial profiles than dog fur.
Researchers believe the beard environment makes microbial growth easier. Facial hair can trap food particles, skin oils, sweat, and moisture from breathing. Hair fibers can also hold dust and airborne microbes, creating conditions where bacteria can multiply.
Studies on skin microbiology show that warm, moist environments allow bacteria to form biofilms, protective microbial layers that help colonies grow and survive.
Other research from the University of Queensland has suggested that regular washing reduces bacterial load in beards, but does not eliminate it entirely because microorganisms can quickly recolonize the hair and skin.
There is also an interesting side note about human contact.
Research by the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research found that a 10-second kiss can transfer around 80 million bacteria between two people. Facial hair increases the surface area where microbes can live, potentially increasing bacterial exchange during close contact.
The original Swiss study was conducted to determine whether veterinary MRI scanners could safely be used for human patients.
