On several occasions, satellites have recorded strange flashes of light appearing above thunderstorms. These flashes are not ordinary lightning. Instead, they occur far higher in the atmosphere, reaching almost to the edge of space. For years, pilots reported seeing them, but scientists dismissed the stories as illusions. Eventually, cameras captured the phenomenon. These events are now known as “sprites,” enormous bursts of electricity that rise upward into the upper atmosphere. They appear for only a fraction of a second, forming giant red shapes that resemble jellyfish in the sky. Because sprites are so brief and occur high above storms, they remained hidden for centuries. Only with modern technology were researchers able to confirm their existence and begin studying their behavior. Above the clouds, where airplanes rarely travel, brief flashes of red light appear and disappear. Most people on Earth never see them.
