When a colony senses that they need a new queen, maybe the current queen is old and failing, the bees will build multiple queen cells to replace her. This process is called a 'supercedure'.
When the first virgin queen emerged, it is her instinct to eliminate any other unhatched or rival queens in the hive to establish her dominance and ensure her own reproductive success.
Upon finding an unhatched queen cell, she will attempt to sting the developing queen inside. Unlike worker bees, queen bees have smooth stingers that allow them to sting multiple times without causing harm to themselves.
She also uses her mandibles to chew through the queen cell before delivering the lethal sting.
The worker bees will then remove the dead queens and tear down their cells. This hive had several damaged cells, many with missing queens. We were fortunate to discover one dead queen still in her cell, which the bees are in the process of removing. Giving us a glimpse into queen bees' merciless behaviour and their royal death match.
